Does anyone beside me feel that films that are under 5 years old should not be getting a Criterion release? Especially films that went directly from theaters to a Criterion release?

When you say best cover art, are we talking about just the cover? Or the entire case--inside and out, back/spine? Because if it's the second, then I think Fire Walk With Me wins running away.

Why do you think that? Isn’t ‘contemporary’ part of their mission statement?

House looks so utterly nuts. I feel as though this had to either be lots and lots of fun to make, or OTOH a totally miserable experience. Well, it could have both, I guess.

It really is one of those things that looks so totally odd that I almost want to get it, regardless of whether or not I will like it.

Oh, and Ray, get His Girl Friday.

Now, now, I never said that. But His Girl Friday is an absolute favorite of mine, especially among American films. As good as The Philadelphia Story is -- mainly because of the performances -- it just doesn't rate when compared to the Hawks' classic.

Aaron if you haven't seen House, then your life is really meaningless up to this point.

You should rectify that as soon as possible.

Preferably under the influence of some sort of psychedelic drug.

I recommend peyote.

Not me. Carlos, Revanche, Everlasting Moments, Blue is the Warmest Color and Frances Ha are some of my favorite pickups. Oh, Fish Tank too.

Now if we're going by just the front cover art alone, then Jabberwocky would probably get my vote.

Shame I didn't really like the movie very much.

Yeah, I blind bought Blue is the Warmest Color and Carlos, but I knew a good deal about them even without seeing them.

Fish Tank I basically knew nothing about, except that Fassbender was in it. And that's more than enough usually for me say, "Go for it." I'm so glad I did. That is one hell of a film, but unfortunately I hardly ever see anyone talking about it.

No, I think that contemporary movies getting their Criterion release initially rather than having to wait for a double-dip several years down the line is better for collectors.

Were you being serious? Because I've experienced that cactus 3 times at 3 different Native American medicine ceremonies. I can tell you its not what you think it is (as in, you won't be tripping balls).

My days of (pretty heavy) psychedelic drug use have been over for decades now. I'm pretty sure the last time was LSD at a Grateful Dead concert in the early 90s.

Ah well, we were young, which, sadly, I have not been for a while now.

Whatever asshat at either Barnes & Noble, Ascendia, Australia Post, or anywhere associated with overseas mail orders who thinks it's funny to mess up my packages, STOP.

My Essential Jacques Demy set arrived...

Plastic covering torn, held with sticky tape, box dinged, films mishandled in casing, and the DVD of Une Chambre En Ville is scratched beyond repair.

It's not funny anymore.

This is the third time something's gone wrong with a B&N Criterion order.

1st time was when they "lost" a package. (Only for it to arrive, despite being refunded!)

2nd time was when my copy of Naked Lunch was in the incorrect casing, causing the cover to crease.

Any more mistakes, and blood will be spilt.

I sure hope that one day Criterion will release David Mamet's Homicide (1991) on Blu ray. Caught it last week for the first time. Excellent film.

Just putting it out here that a good while ago I blocked Ray Jackson's posts, not because of any offence caused, but I was bored and annoyed by his constant stream of "cult of weird personality" posts. It worked for a good while and now suddenly I find a bunch of other people quoting and responding to that stuff, and this thread has gotten a little harder to go through. Just my two bits, feel free to ignore this post.

It's unfortunate that Fish Tank isn't talked about more, and director Andrea Arnold's recent American Honey is also a terrific film. As good as Fassbender is here, I thought Katie Jarvis in the lead role of Mia was fantastic (and regrettably, I've not seen her in anything since).

No. While all of us may at one point or another disagree with some their choices, but to have such a blanket embargo would be suggesting that the curators of the collection do not have the ability to themselves discern good cinema and need external confirmation before committing to a release.

My issue with Criterion in regards to the IFC deal (which I believe is what you're referring to) is that it would seem to necessitate Criterion releasing a certain amount of IFC titles, regardless of whether they truly merit it. I like a lot of their IFC titles, but I'm acquiring them as I would any new release of a film I want...as to whether they can all honestly be considered "important classic and contemporary films" for The Criterion Collection is certainly a matter for discussion.

And yes, Criterion fans can debate everything from Armageddon and Salo to The Breakfast Club, but the IFC deal means a good deal of IFC titles automatically warrant inclusion in The Collection.
