Episode 1: To know that no "new" Star Wars film can be as worse as that.

Then Episodes 4-6.

Is reverse that, and make it episode 2 instead.

Episode I's the least important, but seeing where Anakin comes from, establishing his mom, how he meets Obi-wan, and Padme's initial arc make it worth watching. If nothing else the pod race is exciting.

Episode II's probably the worst, but his tons of necessary exposition for Anakin and it builds his relationships with Padme and Obi-wan in a way that's needed for the pay off in III.

III's the only prequel better than an OT movie (Return of the Jedi), and the last hour, despite some annoying pitfalls, is really poignant stuff.

I like to go IV, V, I, II, III, IV.

Jedi's emotional pay off with Luke and Vader plays a lot better if you're just coming off the end of Sith.

Just watch them all in order of release. That's how the story has played out over time so just follow it like that. Watching the prequels first does ruin the original trilogy for sure though.

At the risk of veering too off-topic, this has to be said because honestly, roytherobot, I'm trying to save you time and misery.

Having just rewatched III because my kids picked it and I'm a pushover, I will say without a doubt Revenge of the Sith and Attack of the Clones are equally terrible. Phantom Menace is at best somewhat tolerable, despite Jake Lloyd and Jar-Jar. No way in hell is Sith better than Return of the Jedi. Jedi is at least fun to watch, Sith is like having a root canal without any local anesthetic then getting kicked in the mouth a few times after for good measure. I understand that it's a tragedy, but watching Sith is an equally miserable experience to watching Clones because it's a sluggishly paced, horribly edited, poorly acted and overly-long bore fest.

The cool part is both my boys decided that when it was over, they never wanted to watch Sith again and were requesting to watch the teaser for The Force Awakens on repeat. BRING ON TFA!!!

Please, please, please. Please let's not have another 500 posts with everyone's favorite movie order. It's really completely absurd.

Just take the numbers 1,2,3,4,5,6 and figure out every combination and then do it again without #1 and you'll have a complete list of all the responses you're going to get without endless redundancy.

However, the top responses are going to be these:
1,2,3,4,5,6 (story order)
4,5,6,1,2,3 (release order)
4,5,1,2,3,6 (OT without the end, backstory, end)
4,5,6 (OT only)

This. The OT is the benchmark.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I think I'll watch the original Trilogy first, then if I can I'll watch the prequels. My question wasn't necessarily meant to start a discussion of what's the best order to watch them in, but instead to ask if it was necessary to watch them all to be able to enjoy Episode VII to the fullest.

Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.

I've decided that when I inevitably have to introduce someone to Star Wars next, it'll be that order (with the old Clone Wars miniseries between II and III).

Regarding movie order watching, pick any order you like - prequels first or OT first. As much as I dont like the prequels there are still positive aspects in them. Watch Phantom Menace for Darth Maul. Watch Attack of the Clones for Jango and Dooku. Watch Sith for The Emperor.

It's definitely worth it to watch everything right now, including the cartoons, to psyche oneself up for The Force Awakens.
