Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but my sub refuses to work in Direct and Pure Direct modes on my Denon 3808. My sub only turns on when set to Stereo, even though the Direct/Stereo setting has the sub marked as 'ON.'

Not complaining too much since my B&W's handle a majority of the lows pretty well. It's just that the added oomph of the SVS sub makes it nice.
Hi Lou,

Check that with the Denon instructions; I can't recall if that is the same with my Onkyo 885 Pre/Pro, but there are some rather "funky" things that the makers have done using the subwoofers in certain modes. That is partially why I confirmed the set-up for things with Chad of Epik for my Conquest sub. I will get a 2nd and have 2 Epik Conquest subs and ordering the 2nd in December. With those units and the big tower speakers I will run a set of speaker wires with banana plugs from the woofer input of the speakers to the HF inputs of the subwoofer amp. I will also run the cable (s) out from the Pre/Pro to the subwoofers for LFE in multichannel sound. With the amp on the back of the Epik Subwoofers I can throw the toggle switch to run using the inboard crossover and adjust the volume for usage when wanted in 2 channel with the main towers. Or, I will be able to throw the toggle switch on the back of the subwoofer amps for LFE and run the LFE coming out of the Pre/Pro for multichannel sound, but again have to adjust the output for the subs.

The XPA 2 is downright frightening with HT. I ran the NHTs full range to experiment and wow, what an incredible difference. The bass from that amp is staggering. It added so much visceral impact to the experience, not to mention detail. There wasn't a hint of strain, or harshness with any of the material. The sound quality is excellent. The Emotiva's neutrality speaks for itself. The XPA 2 is definitely a keeper.

Just an FYI, the XPA-1 is currently on sale for $899.

If only I had the room! Oh well, bring on the XPR-7.

Hi Drew,

If you can afford the XPA-1, you can get a stand to place one amp above the other. Just something to consider. Of course the stand and the levels of the stand would need to be to support the weight and there should be sufficient breathing room for each amp.

I've actually thought about this. I'm going to have to custom build a TV stand for my center/TV upgrade which will hopefully be in before Christmas. My only problem doing that is that my reference speaker (the one that will benefit the most from an XPA-1) would be the center channel. My 6.1s wouldn't need the extra juice an XPA-1 provides, and I was looking for a HT amp, as I watch movies 95% of the time, and music listening is only done through Pandora radio. And by HT amp, I just want a multichannel solution mostly. The XPR-7 is a giant, but it's only 1 giant that I'd have to deal with.

You can always do something of this sort as well Drew . This is 2 stands I bought at IKEA for $50.oo each ! I painted the inside & put wood veneer on the outside . There is A lot of weight there !

Possibly...

Only problem is my center channel is going to be 40.2"x13.4"x12.1" (WxDxH), weigh 73lbs, and I can't wall mount my TV (I rent). I'm going to have to develop some sort of 'waterfall' type TV stand. This is an extremely early sketch of what I had in mind.

This way, there is plenty of open air, minimal design, and sturdy enough to hold the weight.

That looks cool Drew . Looks simple to build & make plenty sturdy to hold all the weight that will go on it .

I like the monster center channel , Always like seeing A huge center channel .

I'd actually like your thoughts on this, as I know you work with wood in some form and fashion. I kind of like the floating center channel look, but I don't know what thickness I should get. What thickness is needed all around to get stability in this design?

Ok , I would use 3/4" wood because of the weight you plan on putting on it ! 1/2 " would work But then I would have an issue of would the wood start to sag , I have seen it happen !

Questiom ~ Are the sides going to be solid or open.
If it where me they would be solid .

3/4" sounds good and sturdy.

I planned to have the sides solid, stopping at level of the base of the center channel, because the sides of the speaker are ported. I don't know how expensive the slabs of wood would be to make the sides/bottom in one piece. Each side would be about 34" tall and 24" deep, and the bottom slab would be 24" deep and at least 40" wide.

If I can interject/join in

With those types of loads and size you'd be best to get 3/4" plywood. There are plenty of great cabinet grade plywoods out there (birch, hemlock, oak etc) and then you can get some banding for the edges so that it matches the face.

How do you plan on mounting/supporting the floating center?

The side pieces can always be 12" wide pieces side by side to get the height needed .
the framing I would use 2 x 2 pieces of the same type of wood .
For the feet I would use 8 of them too. That way you have A leg under the amp/amps on bottom !

Sorry took so long ~ Neiber came buy to tell me she will be gone all weekend

Well, that's a mystery to me!

Something like that. I don't know how wide I can have the middle section to give it the stability it needs. The base island (not pictured, but mounted on the 'shelf') I want only to be as big as the base on the speaker itself. Unfortunately, I don't know the dimensions are on that.

ok, so 12" width 3/4" thick wood is standard/available at most places?

Also, you lost me on the framing pieces and feet. I'm not familiar with carpenter terms, or DIY projects for that matter. Could you elaborate?
