Sony showed the first 4K consumer TV at IFA 2012. Everything takes years to manifest itself into something that this marketplace finds useful. Your comment just remind me of similar views with the first 4K opinions. I could certainly remember 4K is dead because nobody need it. Then what happened.
OK, putting aside science and objective comparisons, please tell us what medium will make 8K a standard in market?

You seemed to do the opposite of providing factual conjecture using that YouTube video.

Some online comments
  • No difference between 1080p and 4K in terms of sharpness. Lol. OK buddy.
  • Kind of sad that he never said anything about ppi and why that’s basically what matters

For now it's premature to discuss what will be the dominate form of 8K content.

What has been observed is Hollywood shooting films with 8K video techniques, 8K live broadcast via satellite by NHK, BBC News. Independent 8K Red camera owners authoring 8K YouTube videos. 8K games using capable computer setups and monitors.

The dominant form of 8K content should be . . . sports @ 120 FPS. It's very important that they do not compromise and make it 60 FPS.

What happens if you don't like sports? I like realistic stories conveyed in the possible way. Don't think reality shows at 8K @120 FPS will be the heart throb either, but thats what we will be stuck with!

IMO 8K is going to be used very sparingly. Like for sports only and only streamed. All other content will be a combo of HD and 4k UHD. They may shoot other content in 8K but then down rez it to either HD or 4K for viewing.

The reason I brought up reality shows, is because in Asia as well as in the states, these reality based competitions are quite dominate. Its seems fairly easy for these to be using state of the art 8K cameras once the broadcasting part is implemented. But at the beginning it would be likely paid sporting events with special displays would be whats available initially here.

You realize 8K@120 isn't part of the HDMI 2.1 standard right? I also doubt broadcasters that aren't the NHK are willing to accomodate the bandwith needed to deliver that kind of data. 4K@120 or even just 2K@120 could easily be done if the people in charge actually wanted to, so far they've seemed reluctant.

HDMI will continue to evolve. 2.1 is not the last version. That's for sure.

That's definitely true, though I don't think broadcasters in general are going to bother keeping up with the evolution of HDMI, though maybe that's just my biases showing. The amount of cord-cutters seems to be growing though, not decreasing, so it's not surprising for the broadcast industry to stagnate somehow.

When you say "broadcasters" are you referring to OTA like NBC, CBS, ABC, etc.?

If yes then do not be concerned. They have zero interest in broadcasting in any higher resolution than 1080P. Though the new ATSC 3.0 can handle both 4K and 8K UHD, broadcasters see no motivation to spend the money to upgrade. All they see are additional ad dollars and more subchannels

And those that set the standards for ATSC 3.0 knew this would happen. That's why they call 1080P HDR . . . Ultra High Definition.

The Olympics that NHK wanted to be a 8K technical showcase is delayed to 2021.

IOC member says that 2020 Tokyo Olympics will be postponed due to coronavirus pandemic

This occurred because of countries were starting to refuse sending athletes to Olympics if they're held in 2020, example .

^ I don't think anyone will argue that these 8K LCD vendors all use improved backlighting specs as a cattle prod to compell consumers to buy 8K specific models. You get no argument that vendors are being deficient when not improving 4K models to have as good backlighting.

Correct ^ and I'll add that most of the 8K TVs have enhanced video processors.

It's common practice for all TV manufacturers to put the best technologies on the premium models to differentiate them and add value to the flagship series.

8K should go the way of BETA and 3D.

There is NO Need for 8K.

Today I watched Frozen 2 ----- In Blu-Ray.

Good Picture.

Good Sound.

By the Way I have Not seen a 4K Movie on Disc.

I have to spend extra money just for a 4K Player.

Now they want me to spend even more money for a 8K Player.

Then what ????

More money for a 12K Player ??????

People are out of work, because of the Virus, and what are they Spending their money on ????

Yes you guessed it, Toilet Paper and Paper Towels !!!!!

So go ahead People and Buy that 12K Player (that you have been Dreaming about).
