Cutter's Way cover artist Jacob Phillips is the son of Eisner Award winning comic artist Sean Phillips. Both, father and son, have a great run of crime comics with legendary writer Ed Brubaker. Especially Sean and Brubaker did amazing works like Sleeper, Criminal, Kill or Be Killed, Fatale and The Fade Out.

Cool. That I didn't know!

Not that it has anything to do with FCE, but Sean Phillips also did the artwork (not just the front covers below but the entire inner artwork, too) for these 12 Criterion releases:

And Blast of Silence has a few pages of comics by Phillips in the booklet.

I took a chance on Natural Enemies and Heartbreakers this week and I'm really glad I got both. Natural Enemies is pretty amazing and though I was expecting it to be depressing, instead I found it a strangely cathartic experience. There is some minor damage to the master (a 35mm print from the Library of Congress), mostly in the form of a few jump cuts in the audio and a few color temperature changes, but nothing that takes away from the film at all. A film like this could probably never be made today, certainly not with the same high caliber of talent, so I have to highly recommend this as long as you think you can stand the subject matter. There is an interesting alternate (theatrical?) ending on the disc, where director Jeff Kanew made a simple change that drastically alters the ending of the film. When I have the time, I really want to get into Kanew's lengthy new interview on the disc.

Heartbreakers on the other hand is a fun film, with excellent performances from Peter Coyote, Nick Mancuso, Carole Laure and Carol Wayne. I have a keen interest in art, so I found the depiction of the lives of struggling artists in L.A. fascinating. The Tangerine Dream score is excellent and there are some great songs on board, too. If that weren't enough, the film is quite sexy, too, with lots of bare breasts and a love scene presented in its uncensored version, with additional nudity that had to be removed for an R rating. I'm pleased to see that an isolated score was included and again, time permitting, I want to go back and watch the new interviews with Coyote and Mancuso.

I haven't watched Bilitis or Married to the Mob, yet, but on the strength of enjoying the above two films, I ordered Cutter's Way, which is another film I've long wanted to see.

I thought as a halfway subscriber I could avoid staying up until midnight for BF, but if I want Bilitis (the only one I skipped originally) at half price I guess I had better set my alarm as usual…

Radiance Films in the UK, the new label by Fran Simeoni formerly Arrow Video, partners with Fun City

Radiance is proud to present Fun City Editions UK, the celebrated label from the US which is focused on reissues of maverick repertory cinema that can best be described as works that exist "outside of their time." Spanning an array of genres, artists and countries, but with a unifying focus on forgotten and overlooked treasures, each Fun City release will present new restorations and comprehensive extras which contextualize and illuminate the artistic and historic value of the piece.

The first Fun City titles released in the UK include Jonathan Demme's wonderful crime comedy Married to the Mob and Ivan's Passer's cult classic neo-noir Cutter's Way.

Interesting that Radiance’s edition of Married To The Mob is $10 cheaper than the VS edition. Even with shipping to the US, I’d still be saving $10.

Happy to see FCE branching out to UK folks by way of Radiance! Very nice. I'm sure region B folks will be appreciative of that and the other extras they're getting as well in that first bundle

Sadly, I've gotten a backlog of FCE films now I was soo good at watching each one when they came in each month, but right now, I'm backlogged back to Coca-Cola Kid. I've been trying to make my way through other neglected parts of my collection over the last few months. November and December look to be good times to catch up on these watches, though!

Buy the old Kino release, its a better transfer than the FCE/Radiance.

I finally sat down to watch Rancho tonight, great film. Loved the interview with Jeff really added a lot to the release, a great example of what extras should be.

No Fun City Editions announcement today. Should we infer that they are indeed parting ways with VS?

Bit disappointed that Jah hasn't updated customers. Least you can do when people have supported the label from the start. Just my 2 cents.

If he is bound by contracts and waiting for stuff to settle before saying anything and not wanting to piss people off, then the prolonged silence makes sense.

Oh yeah of course. I don't expect anyone to break contract for people on a forum, but a quick update to let us know if any titles, regardless of means, are still coming would be nice.

Per Instagram, they had some unfortunate delays, but there’s some big releases in the works, and we’ll get news (probably a release) by New Years. Till will tell if it’s a VS partner release I guess.
