rwojtalewicz, I think you would probably change your mind if you heard really high end bookshelves, you can ask Callas on this. I believe he heard the Excite 16 and the Focus 110 from Dynaudio.

I personally auditioned the Rainmaker from Totem and you would be impressed of what those bookshelves can achieve, Nothing to do with C-200 nor the CB-20.

In fact next to the Sttaff using same driver size (not the same driver), you did not even feel the 3 hz difference in the botom end.

Of course we are talking about speakers costing almost 3 times the price of the C-200 but those puppies can hit low and you never think they are bookshelves with a single 5.5inch driver they extended as low as 42 hz and they do it well without colouration nor distortion. Of course I auditioned in a proper room and with Arcam Amp and cd player.

Maybe the CB-5 they are th replacement for the C-50 I think they will work great as surrounds.

Don't forget break in they will sound brighter in the beginnig but will tone down after a good 200 hours of use.

I should be receiving my package for the pair C-100's today. I already received my 31" Sanus stands from Amazon Saturday.

Once I have my 7.1 setup... one of my rear speakers (Rear Surround) will be closer than the other 3 because I don't have room to place it against the wall like the other 3 unless I move that desk.

Hopefully it won't sound that off.

Well, I wasn't thinking about high end speakers when I mentioned that. What you said is no doubt true. I concur.

However, having said that, and if I could afford high end bookshelf speakers, then I could afford high end towers as well. My choice would still be for the towers. So, I stand firm. No more bookshelf speakers for me, for the fronts anyway, whether they be high end or middle of the line. My other pet peeve are speaker stands. To me, they aren't attractive and they're an eyesore.

I agree with you, but the bookshelfs I am eyeing are about $1400-1800 depending on which model I get, and the Towers are $2500-$3600. Not exactly in the same price bracket... plus I need another $850-1000 for the center channel. Its on thing to get a pair of $550 speakers over a $395 pair of bookshelfs.... but I am in a different ballgame when I upgrade.

Also there is a review I read about the Dynaudio Focus 220s and 140s and the guy said that when he went from the 220 towers to the 140 bookshelfs as fronts, he never looked back to the towers, thats how good these bookshelfs are.

Yup this is what i'm talking about for my part I Auditioned the Rainmaker at 1100$ US and wow the really can put on a show, I wrote my appreciation of them in the Totem Forum but what I can say now is i'm leaning towards the Sttaf 1800$ with a really small foot print, the most versatile Totem speaker and the warmest of all, Some people qualify Totem as Neutral speakers but honestly when you compare the Rainmaker to the Sttaff it's clear to me that the Staff is warm sounding and this is even more obvious when compared to the Arro.

No worries Callas I will audition The Focus and the Xcite.

I would say that guy was nuts. He must have placed the 220s in a bad location to like the 140s better. I would still get the DF 220s if it were me.

its not that he liked them better just that the DF 140s are that good. where is a medium sized room they are completely satisfying.

Quote:
Later in the review process, I moved the Focus 220s aside and tried the Focus 140s up front and finessed the Sub 250's controls to achieve a super-smooth sub/sat blend. The exercise also increased my respect for the baby sub; it's a seriously powerful pup. I won't name names, but some micro subs that belt out room-shaking lows can sound flabby on music. The Sub 250 suffered no such indignities and was always tuneful. I won't claim that the Focus 140s had the full gravitas of the Focus 220s, but, after a few days, I never looked back. The Focus 140s' sound was as pure—and their wide-open imaging just as precise—as the towers. I fired up the Alexander DVD again, and the smaller system's visceral, feel-it-in-your-guts sound was immensely satisfying. I'd go so far as to say that, in a cozy home theater, the Focus 140s will probably make more sense than the Focus 220s—and save you $1,200.
Besides the wife is not going to let me spend that much on a pair of speakers.....

Forget about speakers. There is a new baby on the way. The other two angels are also growing up very fast. Instead of speakers, you better start thinking about a college fund.

so i'm a hypocrite...

i normally advise people that they don't really need an additional amp unless they have really hard to drive or low impendance speakers. i have neither of those, but that didn't stop me from buying a 5 channel adcom gfa 7400 to run the energys...

anyway, it should be here by the end of the week. now i must buy interconnects...

Question Mirage vs Energy

Hey Guys,

I was in the Magnolia room in a Best Buy looking at getting the following system:

Mirage OS3-FS-B x 2 (Towers)
Mirage OS3-CC-HGB (Center)
Mirage OS3-SAT-HG (Rears)
Mirage OMNI-S10 Black (Sub)

I go there today to listen to them again and see that they now carry the Energy CF line of speakers. I was getting a demo of the ENERGY CF-50's, CC-10, CB-20's and the ESW-C10. They sounded great. I was looking to see what you guys think of both of these systems. Which ones would you get? Thanks

DJ

Energy and Mirage were both once owned by API (Audio Products Intl.) and they were bought buy Klipsch in 2006. The Omni S10 is actually an Energy designed S10.3 sub, they just put Mirages name on it. I am a bigger fan of the Energy sound, although the 2 companies share information and technology with each other (for instance the ribbed surrounds on Mirage speakers are a patented Energy design), and aren't too different in sound, they vary in style quite a bit.

The Energys may have more power to them, and the Mirage speakers will have perhaps better imaging. I find the Mirage speakers to be a little airy, and I like a little more meat to my sound. However both are designed and engineered really well.

If it were me I would buy the Energy speakers and the Mirage sub. DO NOT BUY THAT ESW-C10, I can tell you 10 different subs that are better.

There, your 10 different subs. All around the same price too.

I would get any of the eD, Hsu, Outlaw, or SVS subs I listed. Just see what works best for you. I really like Hsu and I own an eD, Hsu designed the Outlaw subs, and SVS makes some of the best also.

However the eD A2-300 or Hsu STF-2 or SVS PB10 would be my first choices.

I know you heard the S10.3 once, but how would you rate it in that list.

It's tough for sure to comapare when you have not heard them in the same environment but if the price is right on the Omni S10, it could be a good choice although I'm sure your ED will outperform it.
