But I like to say they "Put out the most important films in the world + some crap IFC let them have in a good deal". And "Criterion loyals" eat that crap up. Some try to buy everything they put out. They can put out Transformers and people will all of a sudden love it.

Give them props for stuff like Dillinger is Dead, though Janus kind of helped bring that, while Criterion crapped on us by not doing it in blu, instead that month put out 2 re-release money makers (Malick blu, and Kurosawa blu-rays).
While I understand where you're coming from, I have a few issues with this post.

Criterion is a business, and like all business, they have to make money. They can't always put out the most obscure titles in the world and expect people to buy them in droves. How does putting out Kurosawa, Malick, or Bergman make them a lesser company? Some of us like said filmmakers. This company has done so much for getting relatively unknown films that no other distributor would touch out there, but this post reeks of whining because the specific titles you only want in there aren't in there. Be thankful a company like Criterion even exists in today's economic climate. Studios continue to make more conservative choices in films than ever, and yet Criterion still puts out films that not a ton of people will line up to buy. I'm sure you didn't mean for it to come off as whining, but I hate when a company like Criterion, who are trying to keep these films alive, gets shit on because their titles, obscure as they may be, are still not obscure enough for some. Again, this isn't really just you CG, it's an attitude I see more and more these days and it drives me craaaaaazyyyyy.

I believe they for sure choose a mix of titles to release, and sometimes the releases take so long from licensing to release that I would think they choose based on quality.

They do like to work with current filmmakers for their releases... such as Wes Anderson, and David Fincher. This is were I would think Curious Case of Benjamin Button / Paramount co-release was born from. Esp since it has been noted that the extras were completed by Paramount for the Criterion release.

I have to admit, while some of the IFC titles have been decent, some have been so/so. I felt that those IFC titles took away other BLU releases we could have had. too bad the non-Criterion IFC Blu releases aren't up to the same picture and audio quality. I think the IFC titles deserve great releases but very few really deserve Criterion releases. (they all deserves top notch quality HD releases.)

My patience won't have to be tested now...... The Magician and Darjeeling unexpectedly arrived on my door-step........ Will watch The Magician (which has a much nicer looking cover than what I perceived it to be from online photos) tonight when the kids are asleep......

I'll watch Darjeeling within the next couple of months

I really think that Criterion should do some Lynch movies on blu ray, especially Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive. But I wish that they would do them all. Has anybody heard if any of these will be coming to Criterion, or just to blu ray for that matter?

I too, would like to see Mulholland Drive on some sort of blu. Surprisingly, Lynch is nowhere to be found in the CC, apt as some of his films may be.

Get a region-free player and pick up the Region B release of "Mulholland Drive" from Studio Canal. It's a solid release. Problem solved.

And, as much as I enjoy Lynch's films, I still don't think he needs a spot in the Criterion Collection as much as some people do. The only films of his that I would even consider to put out by Criterion would be "The Straight Story," and "Eraserhead" & his collection of short films, which he put out on DVD himself years ago.

CC

on the topic of Lynch in Criterion:
http://mubi.com/topics/11087

I dont think he needs Criterion. I just think he needs some of his stuff on Blu. The fact that the only stateside Lynch Blu release we have is Dune is pitiful.

Who you telling? I would LOVEEEEEE to have a Bunuel on blu.

No dude, feel the way you want. I wasn't trying to knock Criterion for releasing Kurosawa ad Bergman films (as I put Godard in that sentence too). I was just explaining to him that there isn't a "Select" way of going about what they pick, as Bergman, Godard, and Kurosawa isn't directors to "select" from, or they are not these unknown guys, so it's not hard to decide to want them in the collection. Not knocking anything. Just was answering him.

I brung up obscure movies, because again he just asked how they go about it, in which I replied it's not a hard decision to make when wanting to release a Kurosawa or Godard. It isn't like the collection is filled with obscure. You get what I'm saying. This post was harmless, no intention to knock anything. But yes, you should of said what you said, because I do knock alot, just not in that post, or tried not to.

I do have the Studio Canal Blu-ray release of Belle de Jour. That counts, right? Unfortunately, it's region B locked. Oddly enough, I found it on Barnes & Noble's website during one of the Criterion sales (it was not on sale - I was just surprised they had it). The PQ is pretty good - not Criterion worthy, but much better than the old non-anamorphic Miramax DVD.

I have not taken advantage of any Borders sale whatsoever. Even with their current 40% off, since their prices are quite expensive to begin with.

Speaking of B&N employees, first the 12th and then the 9th...now I'm reading November 1st. Eh??? I think no one knows the date...they are hearing anything within November. Flip a quarter and one can guess a date for the next B&N sale.

I'm sure Lionsgate/Studio Canal will release a Bunuel on Blu. Or did you mean specifically from Criterion? Hehe...

Curious, have you or anyone received any online coupons? Haven't received anything since early spring of this year.

I just don't have extra cash to go region free yet, so I'll be waiting for Lionsgate or Criterion, which hopefully won't be too long (Criterion rumored for a year now to have more Bunuel titles coming).

Wow! Finished watching "Paths of Glory" once again but was very impressed with what Criterion Collection included with the special features and also being quite surprised about what took place on the set during filming.

Especially from producer James B. Harris and what took place behind the scenes, especially with actor Timothy Carey. The 1979 "Parkinson" interview with Kirk Douglas and the 1997 news segment of Theophile Maupas, of which the story was based on. I

I always find it interesting to find these old interviews on Criterion Collection releases and just wonder how many people actually work in the research department to find these older segments and getting the clearance for them. I was pretty impressed.

Anyway, an awesome release especially compared to my older MGM DVD. Anyway, will comment more after its release.

kndy...

Here are two additional coups that I found:

1.) Additional 10% off...which for CC BDs and a membership would be 30% total. ENDS 10/17

http://www.barnesandnoble.com/email/...1512-_-Primary

2.) Additional 15% off...which for CC BDs would be 35% total...this one I only found via my email. ENDS 10/17 as well.

Just watched Enter The Void in theaters and it was amazing. The cinematography was simply incredible. It was a wonderfully engaging movie and more of an experience because the way it is shot you actually feel as if you are the main character.

I highly recommend you go see this movie in theaters if you have the chance.

And its IFC so there is a slim chance criterion will release it which would be great. But I think that IFC has said they would be releaseing this one themselves :\
