Or the movie is just streaming on FilmStruck and it has no bearing on a physical release.

Maybe, but the shout-out from Criterion is bound to get people thinking...

Only 5 more days 'til the next clue.

I have a sealed Criterion DVD of it if anyone's interested in buying / trading me for it.

I keep talking myself out of picking that set up second hand, because I have a really hard time buying DVDs of things that will probably likely surely one day get BD releases from somebody... On the other hand, it seems like the one I want most—The Seventh Victim—is pretty far down the list of Lewton's People Want, so even if they start releasing them, it'll be a while 'til they get to that one, unless they release a box, so my best bet may be to just go for it.

Yeah, I wouldn't be double dipping on this. Now if Criterion releases The Great Escape, I will be all over that.

I didn't double-dip on "Strangelove" and I probably wouldn't double-dip on "Eternity", but I do think it would be cool if Criterion became the label that tries to put out all the Best Picture winners that they can under one umbrella.

This already has a stellar release from Sony. The only positive thing I have to say if Criterion releases a version of their own is that it will get people to buy the movie who haven't bothered with the Sony release. That way more people will discover what a fantastic film this is. I really hope streaming it on FilmStruck opens it up to a whole new generation of viewers.

I am a HUGE fan of From Here to Eternity, but I would prefer they stop releasing films with already great transfers and devote more time to upgrading all those wonderful MIA movies in their DVD back catalog to Blu-Ray. Many of their best releases remain stuck on DVD, and some have had hi-def transfers available in Region B for years.

Fred Zinnemann directed so many good to great movies. One of the finest directors in the history of cinema. If Criterion wants to release more of his work, I am all for it, but I want them to break open the Universal vault and bring us his The Day of the Jackal before anything else.

Gotta be honest, I really hope they don't do that. Most BP winners have pretty solid discs already and, to be honest, the majority of BP winners post-1990 really aren't interesting. Criterion releasing stuff like "Forrest Gump", "Shakespeare in Love", "American Beauty", "A Beautiful Mind", "Million Dollar Baby", "Crash", "Slumdog Millionaire", "The King's Speech", "The English Patient", etc. would be a huge wet fart IMO when so many great films have yet to hit BD. I'd be down if Criterion could pry "Ordinary People" away from Paramount though.

The Arrow disc of "The Day of the Jackal" is excellent, so I have to imagine it's only a matter of time before it's released over here. Criterion would make sense, but it wouldn't shock me if Shout Factory snatches it. Either way, I'd assume they'll use the same master Arrow used, which looks very good.

I'd rather see Criterion pick Raging Bull - same as the Academy should have.

"Raging Bull" is definitely a better film, but "Ordinary People" is one of the few BP winners without a BD release.

^ I never was a fan; should give it another chance. As 1980 goes - and since Raging Bull has a fine release - The Elephant Man would really be the one I'd ask for.

I'm just talking about their recent trend (and rumors like "Annie Hall"), which seems to so far cut off at 1991 anyway.

I bet we get "Lost Weekend" this year.

This. People have been putting way too much stock into Filmstruck leading to BD releases from Criterion.

It's surely possible, but I think Criterion is just trying to get more people to join Filmstruck and not hinting at anything in most cases.

Thread is once again under construction, so don't worry about the absence of the titles in the OP.

They'll be back...and hopefully better than ever.

Me too, though my favorite Oscar nominee that year is The Elephant Man. Plus OP inexplicably doesn't have a BD release yet. The DVD is very old and leaves something to be desired in the PQ department.

Once Tom Jones comes out next week, Ordinary People will be the only Best Picture winner in the last six decades without a BD release. The remaining Best Pictures not yet on U.S. BD and their rights holders are:
  1. The Broadway Melody (1928/29) (WB)
  2. Cimarron (1930/31) (WB)
  3. The Great Ziegfeld (1936) (WB)
  4. The Life of Emile Zola (1937) (WB)
  5. Going My Way (1944) (Universal)
  6. The Lost Weekend (1945) (Universal) (on foreign BD)
  7. Hamlet (1948) (ITV/Criterion) (on foreign BD)
  8. The Greatest Show on Earth (1952) (Paramount)
  9. Around the World in 80 Days (1956) (WB)
  10. Ordinary People (1980) (Paramount)
And it ain't lack of HD transfers; of those 10, AFAIK the only one not available on either HD streaming or foreign BD is The Life of Emile Zola (though most of those could be improved on). The biggest problem seems to be lack of interest in catalog titles, especially at WB.

Not my list, I love The Seventh Victim, along with I Walked With a Zombie, probably my favourite of them all. It’s a crime that these movies are OOP.
