If iTunes did DTS/Lossless audio, I think I’d go exclusively digital. Their 4K image is pretty good/comparable to uhd. Maybe I don’t have a nice enough TV to tell the difference, but that’s just what my eyes see on mine

Supplements are nice but not necessarily essential for me

Very good yes, comparable to physical media definitely not. I bought Apple TV 4K to rent a movie from iTunes. At the end of the day, I only rented a handful of them but never rent anymore because the picture quality is not good enough just yet. In fact from the three 4K Apple TV’s that I bought for that purpose, I already sold two of them.

What do you do when you find a big spoon? You stir the pot with it!

It appears that actor and film producer Brad Pitt is worried about streaming and its impact upon the future of movies. From a New York Times article published on Sept. 4, 2019 titled: The Planets, The Stars And Brad Pitt by Kyle Buchanan there is a paragraph near the end of the article that quotes Brad Pitt in this context:

Still, he’s not especially bullish on the future of big-screen entertainment in the streaming era: “I’m curious to see if movies last, if movies stick around,” he said.

Neither the article nor Brad Pitt elaborate any further, so that's all we get on the subject.

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/04/m...-ad-astra.html

I am still not worried for the future of movies, but I would have liked to have heard more on the matter from Brad Pitt as he apparently has some misgivings.

There you go, Steedeel, you and someone famous in the film industry have a shared concern. Run with it now!

He means the cinema but obviously no movies would mean no HT also. Well, you know me. I have long insisted that HT and films in general are under threat. Whether he means tv series will replace them or we may still have movies on streaming services, who knows.

Not at all.

Brad Pitt says he is curious about the future of movies; that is nowhere even close to predicting the end of them or of any of the many other things that you have placed on the endangered list.

In a July 2, 2019 article that appeared in GQ Australia Brad Pitt had this to say about the future of film and the effects of streaming:

“But I’m curious to see what the future of film is, what shape it takes. I really appreciate the streaming services because we’re seeing more and more quality projects being made. We’re seeing more writers and directors and actors getting a shot. It just tells you how many talented people are out there.

“I like to think there’s room for both,” he says, taking a while to mull it over. “But I could be a dinosaur and not even know it, man. And the comet could be on the way.”

So, he seems to differentiate between films and streaming. Interesting. Sounds like he means the cinema.

we all need to do what is right for each of us.

but I just don't get what I quoted above

Don't get me wrong if you start with "I live in a tiny one room apartment where I sleep on the couch because there is no room for a bed" space is definitely at a high premium and I get the issue of having thousands of disks. But in a normal house or apartment, to me it sounds made up. A 6 inch deep shelving system with 10 shelves (more or less floor to ceiling) can store ~250 films per foot even if we were to assume 200 that would mean sacrificing 5 feet of useless wall space for 1000 films. how many places don't have 5' of walls?

Maybe I'm reading this wrong or there is a typo, but I only wish I could store 250 films per foot of shelf space!

I measured and I only get 24 movies shelved per foot of shelf space if they are in standard blu-ray cases and just 21 per foot with standard DVD cases.

My largest shelving units are 6'2" tall with eight 36" wide shelves; I counted the blu-rays on one of these units and there were 552 titles in total with some cases being a little thicker than others.

My home viewing environment is quite nice, more comfortable, and I serve better concessions. Buying the movie on disc is both a better value and a better experience. agree with what you said, with a small *

the last film I saw in a theater was at the Brossard VIP (upscale theater, need to be 19+,bar, more interesting food options) it was 25$+tax per ticket. Even with just one ticket it can be more cost effective.

That is why I just buy anything I want to watch , it is already a good bargain.

We don't have fancy theaters like that here in Hooterville, sadly.

I agree that simply buying, on disc, anything that I want to watch is a great bargain even if I only watch it once. Having bought laserdiscs once upon a time at their much higher prices, all movie purchases today, on disc, are a fantastic deal to me.

I think that he thinks that having been born sometime in the '90s makes him one of this website's younger forum members.

Either that, or it means that he was too young to remember when he was born first hand and he is just guessing. Or he doubts the official record for some unknown reason. It's a mystery.

Guess our apartment is smaller than normal. Walls with 5' stretches are already occupied by either bed or sofa or TV/entertainment center. A couple of dressers for clothing. Two bookshelves 3' wide (one in LR and one in BR) that stores books, music and movies. I already stopped buying books like 10 years ago and switched completely to ebooks. Culled my physical books to just favorites.

Didn't really start collecting movies until recently though.

Couldn't you have just donated them to a library? Why did you have to go and kill them!

That is not true if your physical copies are well organized.

1) at some point I tried one of those DVD databases but I soon realised it was more of a make work project so I stopped using it.

2) It always takes 2-4 longer to decide on a film when I am at my sisters and we are all trying to decide on a film to watch using Netflix then when they are at my place and we are picking a film from my collection.

3) when my GF moved in with her kids they were amazed by how fast I could pull out the film they wanted to see. This one time when there were some friends over her daughter decided to have a race, one of the friends would call out a title and I would have to find it in my collection and an other friend would need to search it in Netflix. When the person needed to type more then 6-7 letters I would always show the title before the other person.

This brings us to the bigger picture, the quality of Picture and Sound for Streaming Digital. The people that like Streaming enjoy watching their Movies and TV Shows. I have always said my Streaming is Fantastic, I don't see any Degradation or problems. We need some Streaming Specs and Guidelines, if they want to win over the Disc people.
