Whatever you decide don’t overthink it like I did Vilya. I made the mistake of picking up the Xbox One before my flatscreen and by the time I made a decision on my flatscreen the One S came out. Vizio, Sony and Samsung were the contenders. The LG were out of my comfort zone and the Samsung was the bang for my buck at the time. So again, I’m no help with your current situation. As I can’t even pick out a separate UHD player

I think I’d grab Gladiator or Cliffhanger. Another one that isn’t on your list, but I bet looks great is Saving Private Ryan, but these are my preferences and not yours.

There is no 8K content to speak of unless you count Youtube videos like this one:

Not one movie studio has shown any interest or plans to release 8K content that I am aware of, so the question is rather an academic one at this point.

It is theoretically possible to put 8K content on a disc with the same dimensions as a blu-ray disc, but without any 8K content there is no real demand for it. Holographic Versatile Disc, HVD, can hold 6 TB of data, but the playback devices remain wildly expensive, about $15,000, and without any 8K content it will remain a prototype concept.

Streaming in 8K is possible, too, as evidenced by that Youtube video above, but it is very heavily compressed and watching feature length 8K content over the internet will require huge amounts of bandwidth to accomplish and at a time when many still can not even stream in 4K. Streaming movies in 8K would annihilate existing consumer data caps for the many people that must endure such data usage restrictions. More bandwidth usage means higher internet costs, too.

Without meaningful 8K content, and without widespread adoption of 8K displays, how that hypothetical content is to be delivered is kinda moot right now.

Make sense. I guess I was kind of wondering like should we expect yet another format in 7, 8, 10 years. Bluray came out and UHD came out less than 10 years later. Bluray I think was 10 years after dvd

I certainly lack the gift of prophecy, but I think 4K disc is it unless the studios suddenly embrace the idea of providing us lots of 8K content while at the same time a large number of people adopt 8K TVs with an appetite for 8k content. Lots of people with 4K TVs still only watch in high definition at best. Seems like three gigantic "ifs" to me, but I never say never and I don't mind being proven wrong.

I may make a decision on a TV very soon, but the audio side is going to take a lot longer to evaluate. I'm trying to decide about extended warranties, too. I hate the very idea of them as I feel the damn manufacturers should warrant their expensive products for much longer than a single year. My $20 toaster is warranted that well!

I want a second 4K disc player, not because I need one, but just because I like having a back-up device. As such, getting one is a lower priority. At present, I am inclined towards the Pioneer LX 500. I hear that the Panasonic models are not that good with DVDs and I still own a lot of those.

who knows. I am sure if we go back to around 2006 the question would have been "Will Blu-ray be the last physical format" and then "Will 3D Blu-ray be the last physical format".

No one knows what the future will hold. For me 8K could be nice but I would also be interested in 3D (at 4k) higher refresh rates, less compression....

I read between the lines and I know that what you really meant to say was "keep the gifs coming."

Awesome, thanks for the heads up! I will add it to my (ever expanding) wish list.

Well, I pulled the trigger and I bought a new TV.

I bought the Sony XBR85X900F, an 85" FALD display. Delivery is scheduled for the 25th. It will be the biggest TV that I have ever owned by far.

Good choice. Dolby Vision included. I was torn between Sony and LG but went for LG. I’m sure you will love it. I could have easily chose that one or similar.
I’m sure your 4K discs will purr.
