From the Criterion Forum, it appears that they have the rights to Melville's Magnet of Doom (L'Aîné des Ferchaux)

It was The Cameraman that got me as a huge silent fan and really opened the door for me. Speaking of that really needs a BluRay release by Criterion.

Passion of Joan of Arc quickly became one of my favorites when I first saw it about three or so years ago. Since then I've probably watched it over ten times. The close-ups of Falconetti are the best I've ever seen. The "Voices of Light score is beautiful. Master of the House is another great silent from Dreyer.

I think it was also Nosferatu that made me appreciate the narrative power of silent film. Up until then, I just thought of them as movies without sound, as if this was some kind of disability. How wrong I was.

Excellent news if true... but I hope it'll lead to a Melville box-set more than anything.

It won't, since StudioCanal owns many of them. Lionsgate distributes StudioCanal in the US. There was a rumor Criterion might get back their StudioCanal library, but nothing has come of it as of yet. But it would be nice if they did.

I know, that's not necessarily secret information.

It would be nice if they did and that was part of what I'm hoping for...

Can't really imagine Magnet of Doom getting a standalone release, but who knows...

I loved Falconetti's performance. It was absolutely beautiful. I'll look into The Cameraman and Master of the House. I know Criterion has other silent films on blu-ray and DVD, so that makes me happy. Recently I watched The Phantom Carriage and started dipping into Charlie Chaplan (Modern Times). I have a couple more of his films on my Netflix DVD queue.

I knew of silent films, but I always thought I'd find them boring. Shortly after watching Nosferatu on TCM, I watched The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari on Netflix at the recommendation of my brother. These films gave me a whole new outlook on silents, and now they're my favorite. I'll have to dive deeper into the silents that Criterion has done. I love CC releases, my favorite being Vampyr.

StudioCanal has worked with Criterion before (Blood Simple's Australia blu-ray is their master for example).

Does anyone have any strong feelings, one way or the other, on Polanski’s version of Macbeth?

After watching Othello last night, I find myself intrigued by the idea of adding more Shakespeare to my collection. I already own Chimes at Midnight.

Also thinking about picking up Lost in America. But I’m concerned about the Albert Brooks factor.

...anyone not like it?

Last night I went ahead and pulled the trigger on these at B&N. That wraps up my overall haul from this sale. I only ended up buying 6 Blu-rays in total, but I have more Criterions on my "watchlist," so I'm sure I'll be back next sale.

Master of the House was a blind-buy based on StarDestroyer52's word. I couldn't find it for rent anywhere, so I figured what the heck. I like two other silent films by Carl Dreyer, so I'm sure I'll like this one.

Do you like Shakespeare film adaptations in general or was it just this particular one that bored you?

Is there a plastic case/insert available for Sweet Smell of Success? I damaged the spine on mine in a move years ago and it always rankles me when I look at it.

I tend to like Shakespeare adaptations, and I liked it! It’s definitely a more violent adaptation! Throne of Blood is also good!

Macbeth is fantastic. Polanski was exorcising the demons from his wife's murder, and there are several deaths in the film that mimic what happened in real life.

What’s the deal with the HandMade catalog coming back from being OOP? They did Time Bandits a few years ago, but there’s still several that are still MIA (The Long Good Friday & Mona Lisa, off the top of my head).
