This is great. If you ever decide to make this into a print, let me know. I'd love to purchase it.

I hope Criterion releases The Man Who Laughs. Such a great film. I can't see Universal releasing it as it likely doesn't have any mainstream appeal. Would love to see many of Conrad Veidt's film in HD like The Hands of Orlac or Waxworks Which has Conrad and Emil Jennings. Speaking of great German actors one film I've prayed Criterion would acquire and release is Peter Lorre's one directional effort Der Verlorene (The Lost One) I think the film deserves a reevaluation.

If your not familiar with the film here:

Being a big fan of Peter Lorre I would love to see this in the collection.

So The Music Box Theater in Chicago screened Michael Cimino's Year of the Dragon as part of their 70mm film festival they run annually. (How that works considering the film was not shot in 70mm is not something I understand, but that's beside the point.)

This film only has an English language friendly release on DVD. I have never seen it and really want to. I missed it the other night for reasons that aren't particularly interesting.

Anyway, does Criterion have any interest in releasing this film? Does anybody know? I guess it is/was with Warner Brothers? Not sure.

Janus Films's website is now advertising the 4K restoration of The Complete Jean Vigo.

Expect a Blu-ray release sometime in 2019.

Wait, what? Criterion are actually going to re-release this? Sweet! Only looked into it when researching for this past sale and knew I had to get it, but figured I'd get it next sale. So begins the patient, long wait. I didn't even know new restorations had been done.

I'd buy the Masters version of it but Xbox 1 X only plays region 1s for me. I like their stuff too! That is a region 2 disc. I wish it were that easy. This is the only Ozu that has finally grabbed my attention. Darn it! My City Girl 1930 from Eureka was All Region.

Never would’ve expected it to be a big enough seller to get a rerelease.

New 4K restorations of all of Jean Vigo's films coming to Film Forum next week! Including an EXTENDED CUT of ZERO DE CONDUITE plus rare rushes and outtakes. https://bit.ly/2Ms69kJ
Quote:
New restorations of works by the short-lived French director Jean Vigo (1905-1934), including his masterpiece and only feature-length film, L’Atalante (1934), in its unseen director’s cut, and Vigo x 3, a program of shorter Vigo classics Zero for Conduct, À Propos de Nice, and Jean Taris, and a special presentation of outtakes and rushes from L’Atalante and Zero for Conduct: “Tournage d’Hiver.”

Jean Vigo was born in Paris to prominent anarchist Miguel Almereyda, spending his early years on the run before his father’s imprisonment and murder in 1917. His filmmaking career began with À Propos de Nice, considered so subversive that it was banned by the French government until after World War II, and Jean Taris. With Zero for Conduct, Vigo fully came into his own as a film artist. Sickly from a young age and already in delicate health while shooting of L’Atalante (at times he had to direct from a stretcher), Vigo died of lung disease at age 29, three weeks after the film’s Paris premiere.

Does anyone have any friends over at Criterion that might be able to give an ETA on when the "My Criterion" portion of their site will be back up and running? I've emailed and tweeted to them, and also have been leaving comments on their Instagram posts, but not one response. Starting to think we're not getting it back despite the promises that we would when they took it offline in April.

The last time I spoke with them a few weeks back they advised that the new and improved website has been ready for quite some time and that it will be activated once a single day has gone by without receiving an inquiry as to when they're going to start releasing UHD titles.

I'm not sure if it truly means we'll see a re-release of it. They've also done the same thing with Belle de Jour a couple months back, but so far no new BD of that. Though that's probably a good thing considering the new restoration isn't that good. They also are touring a new restoration for Wings of Desire. Unless Criterion plans to do re-releases of all of those, I'm not sure if there's any evidence to suggest The Complete Vigo will specifically get re-released.

What are the chances Criterion will announce their Dec. titles today?

Would be nice ... but I doubt the announcements will be today. I'm guessing they'll wait until Monday.

Low. Usually if the 15th is on a weekend, they take the extra time and announce Monday. Though it's always a nice surprise when they do the opposite.

January- 16th (Monday)
February- 15th (Thursday)
March- 15th (Thursday)
April- 16th (Monday)
May- 15th (Tuesday)
June- 15th (Friday)
July- 16th (Monday)
August- 15th (Wednesday)

They've done it before. Last October they announced January's titles on Friday the 14th. But I wouldn't hold my breath. It's much more common for them to wait 'til the following Monday when the 15th falls on a weekend.

If they were, they would have already posted a hint for one of the announcements on their Twitter today. Unfortunately, they haven't yet so it's probably unlikely since the hint's usually up by mid-afternoon.
