I just ordered Vampire Circus (out next week) from Amazon because I really don't expect BB or any big retailers near me to stock it.
The only stores that I have near me that carry most of the "niche" titles are Ultimate Electronics and Movie Stop. Albeit they carry them in small quantities so you need to be on the ball but they do carry them. It kind of amazes me that I have been able to get all my Blue Underground new releases from UE. However this probably doesn't help many since UE tends to have few stores at this point across the US.

The Best Buy in Louisville, KY(St. Matthews) actually has a criterion section(several titles) for dvd and blu it is at the end of the aisle though not in the aisle itself. The other best buys seem to only carry english speaking criterion blus like red shoes, black narcissus, bottle rocket, and darjeeling. B & N definitely has a much better selection and at better prices than BB

Best Buy was carrying quite a few Criterion BDs for a while, but they seem to have stopped. The titles they have now have probably been sitting on the shelf since they were released and they just haven't sold. The BBs around me haven't stocked any Criterion BDs since before the release of Seven Samurai.
Unfortunately, B&N's prices are only better during their sales. Their normal price is full MSRP minus 10%.

Anybody else have problem playing Videodrome bluray on a laptop? I was able to play it fine on PS3, but not on my laptop, even after firmware update for HP Mediasmart DVD player.

You may have to download PowerDVD 9 (it's free) as I had the same problem when I tried using HP's player and sometimes WMP. If you want to utilize lossless audio though you'll need PowerDVD 10, which costs $50 last I checked. I haven't looked back and love everything I can do with PowerDVD 10.

I downloaded the trial version of PowerDVD 10 Ultra Mk II and tried to play it. It doesn't play. Ironically, both PowerDVD and HPMediaSmart's DVD player are by Cyberlink.

SMDH. It plays now. So when I first installed the updates to HPMediaSmart DVD player and rebooted it, it didn't play. I come back a week later, boot the old laptop up, pop in Videodrome (still hopeful) and now it works. It leads me to believe that it might have something to do with some kind of OS security update where the laptop requires a hard boot. Otherwise, I never downloaded anything myself (besides the previously mentioned update). Either way, it works now. Only my copy of Basic Instinct is still obsolete.

My girlfriend gave me Videodrome yesterday on Blu-ray for Christmas. She ordered it from Amazon.com. Hopefully I'll have time to watch it tonight.

for whatever reason this struck me as really funny.

1) it's a gift on CHRISTMAS. and for anyone who has seen Videodrome, it's not a "nice" film lol

2) it's from your gf. and because of the type of film it is. it would be odd for any gf to give this as a gift. you'll kind of get why when you see it.

3) it's Videodrome for god's sake!

of course there are always other blu-rays that would look odd to receive for Christmas (hell, anything from HBO or Showtime would in a sense, look odd. "oh, thanks for Dexter grandma!", "what's it about?", "a serial killer!" ) which is maybe why i just ask for gift cards

Christmas is always so 'cheery' and happy, and usually the blu-rays i'd ask for are... not lol

either way, enjoy!

I got it for the "all time low price" of $23 at Amazon. Really nice this edition.

I have a question about the statement "Death to Videodrome. Long live the new flesh" at the end of the film. The new flesh is only possible through the Videodrome signal, so how can the new flesh live if Videodrome is dead?

I believe that in the edited story Max Renn snaps, then starts killing everyone in his path, feeding what is left of the signal.

What do you mean by "edited story"?

I have another theory: the "new flesh" is the flesh of what Nicki calls the "next phase". It is the flesh after death, the flesh of pleasure. That makes it different from the flesh that Videodrome wants - they want a flesh that they can control, for their own interests. Max & Ricki want the signal to be used only for the "next phase" flesh. I believe that by "Videodrome" they don't mean the signal, but the organisation behind it when they say "Death to Videodrome".

Anyone with me?

This is the context I mean.

The story editor has many responsibilities, including finding new script/breakdown writers, developing stories with writers, and ensuring that scripts are suitable for production. The story editor will work closely with the writer on each draft of their story and script, giving the writer feedback on the quality of their work, suggesting improvements that can be made while also ensuring that practical issues, like continuity and correct running time, are adhered to. When a script is past due, multiple people may write an act—called "gang banging" a script. Many primetime series have an executive story editor and a story editor.

I like how this film starts out like a Canadian TV movie and eds up like the Three Stooges on acid. Cronenberg is the most anti-intellectual director ever.
