Yeah, the blu ray always sounded fine to me, but obviously a lossless track would be even better.
However, if I had to choose between the two, I would take a video upgrade over the audio upgrade in a heartbeat. I watched this recently for the first time since I upgraded my TV, which is 46 and isn't that big compared to what other people have. Some scenes looked fine, but the compression was atrocious at other places. I can only imagine what it looks like on a 60'+ inch screen. ![]() |

I watched Goodfellas again recently and thought that the PQ wasn't as bad as I remembered. The reason being is that DNR and EE haven't been applied so it looks filmic, what is a problem is as you said I KEEL YOU, is the compression isn't good, grain is there, but hasn't been preserved very well due to the compression, and thus artifacting occurs. If this was encoded using a AVC encode, of which could handle the grain, it could look superb, but as I said, it could be a lot worse.
Casino on the other hand, doesn't look as filmic due to the DNR applied, and it should look superb, because it certainly has the potential. My Wishlist would be: Goodfellas - new AVC encode and lossless audio. Casino - new transfer (no DNR) and AVC encode. AVC encode, providing that grain is preserved. The reason I say this is because a high bitrate doesn't always mean better preservation. I would rather see a well mastered encode than just one with a high bitrate. Best of both worlds would be ideal though. ![]() |

Goodfellas really didn't have a lot of music or sound effects, to benefit having lossless audio. Actually, the movie was predominately dialogue driven.

That's nonsense, the whole film is full of period songs.

I sold my copy of Goodfellas at least 2-3 years ago after reading about a rumor that Warner was going to remaster it. I don't think that will happen until 4K Blu, so if I might just pick the regular version up again if I see it drop to $5 around for the holidays.

Whether or not the soundtrack featured pre-recorded music or an original score, the blu-ray still doesn't have lossless audio.

Because it was the first title released on HDDVD, I wouldn't be surprised if it was the very first time Warner made a HD master of a movie shot on film. And because the standards weren't high they probably thought that the first encoding job was good enough. |
