Otherwise, not really worth a purchase.
I had expected to like it, but I think all it had was insanely graphic over the top violence for the sake of violence, a complete splatter fest with absolutely no redeeming value. Unless you are into D-Grade movies like that, in which case you would love it.

Exactly. I was expecting to like it as well but it just left a bad taste in my mouth when it was over. At least Machete and Grindhouse had the fun factor as well. Sure, they were over the top, but they weren't full on insanely grotesque and ultra violent, which is what my biggest problem with this movie ended up being. There really isn't a redeeming thing in Hobo with a Shotgun that I can think of...

They were working towards a redeeming connection between two lost people, then they killed one of them with a hand in a lawnmower blade.

Machete is inspired by Grindhouse movies, Hobo IS a Grindhouse movie.
its purely for fans of the genre. if you are like me and grew up watching Toxic Avenger and Street Trash on vhs then Hobo With a Shotgun makes sense, if not id imagine it would be difficult to find anything to enjoy about it other than Hauers performance. the things you guys didnt like about it are 100% intentional. it wasnt meant to be anything more than what it is.

The addition of Foxx lowered my desire to see the movie. I just can't stand to watch the guy going back to his In Living Color days.

But this is a Tarantino flick and he's the guy that made Travolta cool again for a while so who knows.

I fully understood what they were going for, and like I said for fans of trash movies, they would love it. Thay accomplished their point, but there is no substance or redeeming value which is not what their target audience looks for anyways. There's a reason it premiered on cable.

Kevin Costner Joining Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Django Unchained’

Briefly: Kevin Costner is going from playing the father of Superman to a slave trainer. He’s currently in negotiations to co-star in director Quentin Tarantino‘s next film, Django Unchained, as a character that trains male slaves to fight in order to entertain white patrons, according to Deadline.

Deadline broke the news of Costner’s probable involvement and points out that the role in question, a character named Ace Woody, is a huge departure from the usual good guy the actor plays. He’s definitely gone bad before, like in 2007′s Mr. Brooks, but Costner became a star because of his almost-too good-guy roles in films like Field of Dreams, Bull Durham, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Dances With Wolves. That’s why when he was cast by Zack Snyder as Pa Kent in the upcoming Man of Steel, it all made sense. Not so much here. Here’s Deadline’s description of the role

Quote:
He’s the sadistic trainer of the male fighting slaves who entertain the white patrons of Candyland as well as the female slaves who are forced to be prostitutes. The club and ranch are owned by Calvin Candie (DiCaprio) and Ace Woody is the one who pits the “mandingo” fighters against one another, and has little qualms about mistreating and even killing the slaves who don’t measure up. The roles that DiCaprio and Costner will play are every bit as sadistic as the one that Waltz played in Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds.
Sounds like a real departure for Costner and I, for one, am all for it. He’s an underrated actor and I love it when people who’ve sort of slightly dropped out of the spotlight come back and do really interesting things, totally out of step with their previous work.

Django Unchained starts filming this Fall aimed at a Christmas 2012 release. What do you think about Costner in this role?
Hell yes! The cast of this movie is so awesome!

This movie is getting more interesting by the week. I.B. was a fantastic film, and I can't see this film underperforming with all of the talent so far. From Tarantino to Costner, this really sounds like a sure thing.

He adds to the film, not detracts.

Definitely. I don't see this movie underperforming at all.

I love Costner, always have. He's usually the best part of a lot of his movies. From The Untouchables to Open Range to the Guardian. He is a great actor who brings a lot to his roles. I can't see how adding him to this is even close to a bad thing.

He's very hit and miss with me, but when he hits it's a home run. I like this casting, between this and Superman Costner seems to be restarting his career.

Yes he has made a few bad movies, but for every bad title he has six great ones. I think people are so hung up on the theatrical cut of Waterworld that's all they focus on and completely disregard his other very long body of work filled with many great titles; The Company Men, Open Range, The Postman, Tin Cup, The War, Wyatt Earp, A Perfect World, JFK, Dances with Wolves, Revenge, Field of Dreams, Bull Durham, No Way Out, The Untouchables, American Flyers and Silverado. All great Costner titles in my book.

They really are. And Waterworld (Theatrical Cut) is a great guilty pleasure film, and the extended cut is actually a pretty damn good film as well. It's hard to fault him for that movie. Not to mention many of his best movies are his westerns, or have a western feel to them. He's a great pick for this movie. I love seeing him making a comeback with this and Superman in the next year. It's about time we got the great Kevin Costner back!

I think we all have an actor or two that rub us the wrong way. NP!
