Sat down this weekend and watched some of my recent DVD buys listed earlier in this thread. Two that come to mind: Animal Instincts 2 and Mr. Mike's Mondo Video.
I was pleasantly surprised by the overall mastering quality of Animal Instincts 2. This was a straight-to-home-video softcore release from 1994, 1.33:1. The newer DVD release I picked up was from a no-frills budget label, the kind that used DVD-dimension jewel cases and crappy inserts, so I was expecting a heavily-compressed movie, or something resembling VHS. However, the movie seemed to be from the master created for the original laserdisc release, and was far more clear than the actual LD. Pretty good for $1. Now, the movie itself... meh. As controversial as director Gregory Dark was at the time (he was a hardcore director who was said to be pushing the envelope for what was acceptable in softcore), the movie is pretty average. Well-produced, but boring. I prefer parts I and III, and still need to find these on some form of optical disc. Mr. Mike's Mondo Video was a movie that I always used to see in the early '80s at video stores, and seemed decidedly anachronistic and old even then. I never got to see it back then, so picked it up on DVD for $1 recently just to satisfy my curiosity... ugh. This move was indeed an anachronism. Partially shot with VHS cameras, partially shot on low-grade film, this DVD looks like a low-quality VHS release thrown together by a bunch of bored teenagers. The humor, such as it is, is incredibly dated, and never should have made it out of the '70s... I'd expected something like Kentucky Fried Movie, but this was far less fun. Watching this was a chore. |

Just bought the DVD "RGB" by Canadian shoegazing band "Sianspheric" and also "Malfunkshun: The Andrew Wood Story" about Mother Love Bone and Malfunkshun frontman Andrew Wood whose death made Pearl Jam and Temple of the Dog possible.
