I have not read The HObbit in a few years so I am forgetting parts of it. Was the whole 'necromancer' thing in the book?

All the foreshadowing of LOTR is PJ's contribution. Tolkien hadn't yet conceived the Sauron and the One Ring business at the time.

Sort of what I figured.

Another question...the storm giants...something that was within the appendages of LOTR's?

The stone giants were mentioned very briefly in the book (sort of like "Oh look, there's some stone giants having a battle while we're scaling the mountain").

I personally LOVED that scene in the movie, even though it obviously deviates from the book a little to build up cinematic tension.

I can't wait for the Extended Edition of this movie!

Yeah, the Sauron/Necromancer thing was from the appendices.

No clue. It's not unlikely, depending on how 4K plays out. The effects would have to be re-rendered - not sure how they build this stuff in computers - but when 4K takes over from 1080, I can see LOTR being one of the first big trilogies to make the transition (especially seeing how Star Wars Ep. 2 & 3 can never look any better than 1080p).

But JRRT went back and revised The Hobbit to fit better with LOTR. What PJ is doing is in the spirit of what JRRT himself did.

It's right in the book. You can read it again and find it.

The Necromancer mention is. But it's mostly there to remove Gandalf from the story so he's not a constant Deus Ex Machina.

But the fact that the Necromancer was also Sauron wasn't established until the Appendices.

The Phantom Menace, Titanic, and the upcoming Jurassic Park 3D conversions all re-use existing effects. I saw some interview with some ILM guy doing the Star Wars conversions and he pretty much said re-rendering the original effects was unfeasible. Maybe WETA took greater care to ensure backwards-compatibility, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Folks, I don't want to come off as any more of a dweeb than I already am, but think some information needs to be cleared up.

The "Necromancer" was, in fact, mentioned in the book (The Hobbit).

If I understand what you are saying, the foreshadowing was not PJ's contribution. The history preceding "The Hobbit" was conceived prior to Tolkien writing this book and his writings were originally started as a linguistic work. That being said, some changes were made in "The Hobbit" to bring it more in line with the LOTR (specifically how Bilbo got the Ring). In the first sentence of the foreward of the LOTR, Tolkien wrote "This tale grew in the telling....", but it's clear that the character of Sauron (otherwise known as Thauron, Mairon, Gorthaur the cruel, etc.) predated "The Hobbit". Whether Tolkien knew for sure that Sauron was the Necromancer when he wrote "The Hobbit" I don't know for sure, but, as he was the chief lieutenant of Morgoth in the earlier writings which led to "The Silmarrilion", it seems logical that after the overthrow of his master that Sauron would be the main antagonist.

There's this guy whose name is Christopher Tolkien and he knows more about what JRR was thinking than I do, but I haven't seen him posting on this thread as of yet.

Yea, i heard about that. I had gotten invited to a screening at that AMC( i think it was that one) they were trying out their new service with employees going to ask for you order and everthing even serving beer inside the theater while watching the movie. I was able to choose a free movie from their list to see for that day.

Is the IMAX as big as the Universal Citywalk Imax??
Yeah...the seats are leather and the some of the screens are about as big as the Century City 15 "IMAX" .....I mean lie/max - mini/max.

Edit - Don't know if it's as big as Citywalk because I've never been there. They say it's 7 stories high and (I think) they said the screen at the Rave is 68'??? Anyway, I found this at http://www.yelp.com/topic/los-angele...in-the-la-area
(Biggest screen at the top). When you're in the 3rd or 4th row, a 68' high screen doesn't need to be any bigger.....even for me.

California Science Center, Los Angeles

Hacienda Crossing 20, Dublin

Universal CityWalk, Los Angeles

Esquire IMAX, Sacramento

Rave 18, Los Angeles

Ontario Palace Stadium 22, Ontario

Irvine Spectrum 21, Irvine

Desert IMAX, Cathedral City

Metreon 16, San Francisco

Fresno Stadium 21, Fresno

I'm in the wrong business....I'd like to choose a free movie. They'd probably give me one too considering how many movies I watch at AMC, but I won't pay for their "stubs" club.

Sauron was established as the Necromancer in the LOTR (book). Gandalf describes Dol Guldur as Sauron's older and lesser dwelling before they (The Fellowship) enter Moria. I'll add one of my favorite lines from LOTR from Gandalf. "Those who pass gates of Barad-dur do not return". It's clear that the appendices changed based on the writings of the LOTR. Professor Tolkien himself described writing the book forwards and backwards. Why JRR mentions the Necromancer may or may not be known, but I suspect the "Deus Ex Machina" guess isn't quite right. Most of JRR's motivations and reasons are a mystery to me. Gandalf, however, was always known to be from Valinor (came from over the sea). Until the publication of "The Silmarillion", the only speculation was which "god" he was. Come to find out, (one of) his name(s) was Olorin - wisest of the Maiar and a gentle soul. He was thought to be "the least" of the Istari (wizards), but not by Manwe (who himself said "not the least"). Olorin feared Sauron and did not want to go to middle earth. Lots of info along these lines if you look for it. Saruman (Curunir in Valinor...Edit - that's actually Sindarin) was considered "the greatest" of the Istari....didn't turn out too well for him. Think JRR was trying to make a point??
