Very interesting read, thanks for posting! A guy called Douglas Trumball is planning a sci-fi epic at 120fps, and in the seventies he showed off test reels of 70mm film that ran at 60fps!

We'll see 4k 3D in commercial feature films soon enough, though. Avatar 2, 4k 3D @ 60fps, maybe?
Highly doubtful as that projector system upgrade (i.e. 4k 3D @ 60fps capable) would be too expensive for widespread adoption by theater owners for general cinema use when AVATAR 2 is released.

The most one could probably hope for (if it were indeed even mastered at that resolution to begin with) would be very unique exhibitions of the motion picture at venues such as the premiere or other special industry events.

Smile Whats your opinion?

I am interested to know what people here think of this.

I read through the thread and its mainly people talking about the HFR. So what do you think of this and how well do like the 3D?

My active display made the 3D quite hard to focus on, especially during any fast movement or quick movement close to the camera. It's so hard to focus on, i actually prefer the 2D version.

That didn't happen at all with my setup. The only movie where I experienced that was Step Up 3 when the kids are being chased by the cops in the beginning.

Maybe TruMotion or some other frame interpolation process was on?

Sorry to hear of your dissapointing experience! Haven't seen anything like that on 3 different setups to date. The 3D encode has been reported as delivering exceptional delineation, especially with compression spread generously across two 3D BD-50 discs.
Refresh-rate specific problems first comes to mind from the display, or possibly ghosting from the active glasses, display, or even possibly HDMI cable-line bleed, leaving image persistent remnants across the L & R encodes that you could interpret as focus problems during fast movement.

Edit: (Checking fast movement and focus.) Would like to add that when using a Head Mounted Display the left and right images of the 3D MVC encode are displayed as separate 2D images, each with its own screen. Comparing these images to the 2D version reveals the same impeccable quality, that are equally well-resolved in motion.

My new favorite 3D movie. Amazing depth. Feels like you are in Middle Earth

It probably means that the combo will include the theatrical 3d blu ray along with an extended cut regular blu ray disk. If that's the case, I'm sticking with what I have already.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Blu-ray
Special Exteded Edition/Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray
That's good news, and probably possible due to the fact that this is a native film.

You know, like how Green Lantern, Harold and Kumar and probably some others had extended editions that were 2D only, most likely because they couldn't be bothered converting the extra scenes and just kept the whole film 2D for consistency.

Good point. I hope you're right about the 3d version being included in the extended cut. That would be awesome.

The 3D disks are extended in 3D.

Quote:
5 Disc BD:
BD 1: 3D Ext Edition Feature + NZ Trailer
BD 2: 3D Ext Edition Feature
BD 3: 2D Ext Edition Feature + Filmmaker’s Commentary
BD 4: • “The Appendices Part 7 – A Long Expected Journey: The Chronicles of The Hobbit – Part 1” • “The Appendices Part 8 - Return to Middle-Earth: Creating the World of The Hobbit”
UV Copy of Ext Edition
So glad I didn't get the current 3D Blu-Ray. Can't wait for this.

EDIT: From the press release

Quote:
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Extended Edition will be available as a 5-disc Blu-ray 3D set ($54.98 SRP) that features the Blu-ray 3D and Blu-ray versions of the Extended Edition; a 3-disc Blu-ray ($35.99) and a 5-disc DVD ($34.99) The Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD all include UltraVioletTM which allows consumers to download and instantly stream the Extended Edition in high definition to a wide range of devices including computers and compatible tablets, smartphones, game consoles, Internet-connected TVs and Blu-ray players.*
The 5-disc Blu-Ray set probably has the extras on the 4th disc on a DVD and not a BD like amazon has listed.

The 3D at 24 fps on a 3DTV for Hobbit 3D looks great with 3D of fine quality as Paul described.

Thanks also for the info posted about the Extended 3D version. Very glad to hear those buying the extended version also get it in 3D, not just a 2D extended version only.

Please fill us in on the extended scenes. I'm betting they added a new action scene in 3D and not just more dialog shots.

Of the Lord of the Rings extended versions, Return of the King seemed to include the greatest extra scenes, including the
[Show spoiler]Mouth of Sauron villain, and the very important scene of Saruman being visited by Gandalf and company, in the aftermath of the war.
The Fellowship extra scenes should have had the Barrow Downs where Frodo gets
[Show spoiler]captured by a Wight (spelling) Demon ghost, and it was up to his pals to save him before it took his soul.
I was very disappointed that didn't make it into the extended version, as it was one of my favorite chapters in the book. But that's for another thread.

I hope the Hobbit extended version 3D is great.

I'm pumped for this. This movie, I completely ok with double dipping, especially with Peter Jackson. The LOTR extended editions added so much to the movie. I would imagine this would be no different.

Yeah I'm going to keep my theatrical cut and buy the extended version as well. The Hobbit in 3D is such an amazing experience!!! I almost feel sorry for those who don't have a 3D set-up. It's the way this movie is meant to be seen for sure. Anything else is a watered down rendition.
