How come there wasn't a Blu ray/DVD combo pack for this film in the UK? I've ordered the US version of the film for that exact reason, splitting the cost with a friend who has a region-free dvd player. Once again the UK get's ripped off. Not a happy consumer...

I hear you, Whelk ... but on the other hand, I've ordered my copy from the UK specifically because there's no extra DVD disc that I'm never going to play. (The releases here in Australia match the US ones, and it's annoying having three discs when you're only ever going to take one of them out of the case.)

Swings and roundabouts, I suppose.

Think it's time to cancel my £20 Amazon order and get the 3D one from HMV, providing my local store gets it in.

HMV with a great, competitive price for a brand new Blu-ray release that's also 3D?! This is absolutely absurd! Picked up X-Men: First Class for £5 in there the other day as well and kept expecting the theft alarms to go off when I left and the entire thing to be a joke!

I'll end up getting both versions, as I did with LotR. But that was easy, since they were all released before Blu-ray arrived, so there were just two boxes to buy.

For The Hobbit, I don't really want to wait three years for the whole thing. So I've decided to buy the cinema versions individually as they're released, and wait for the Extended versions to be released in the inevitable three-film box.

I never saw it in the cinema so I won't wait. But as with LOTR I don't mind having the theatrical and extended versions.

I'll wait for the Extended Edition, despite the nice looking SteelBook.

If you missed the sneak peek, you can watch it here:

Desolation of Smaug Sneek Peak

You'll need the code and can only access it three times.

It's 40 minutes by the way.

I did the same, as long as the company is up-front about knocking out a better edition months after the first I'm okay with it.

The Hobbit special features are very disappointing it would have been nice to see something new that isn't on YouTube or Facebook.

That was the same with LotR, wasn't it? The EEs got the bulk of the extras, and the cinema versions got maybe a trailer and a music video or so.

I'm guessing this is in line with PJ's opinion that the standard releases are for the people who just want the film they saw in the cinema, and the EEs are for the fans who want more of everything.

To be honest, though, I'm not sure what to expect from an EE of Unexpected Journey. I'm not knocking the film, but it didn't generate the "tell me more!" response in me that Fellowship did. If the best thing that PJ can think to mention as an inclusion in the EE is more of the Goblin King's "humour", well that's not much of a drawcard.

I did have the Blu-ray on order but cancelled it after I saw an imported copy of it.

Enjoyed the film but think I will hold out for the EE rather than double dip.

Ask for it as a present at the end of the year.

They had pretty decent extras compared to The Hobbit, with a preview of the extended editions and the next film. This release feels a bit bare-bones in comparison.

That's what I was thinking. I know for a fact I will buy the Extended Editions of these films so don't really see the point of buying this version just to sell it later or never watch them again. I just need to hold out
