Germany Suspiria (Dario Argento)

Apparently, '84 Entertainment will be releasing a new restoration of Suspiria. Torsten Kaiser and TLEFilms are behind the restoration. No word on release date as yet.

Interesting! So now we have two competing upcoming restorations - a German from Torsten Kaiser and TLEFilms and an American as announced by Don May Jr. from Synapse.

Synapse's may not be getting released until 2015 (although 2014 does seem more likely...). I think I may need to consider getting this German release if its an affordable wide release.

From an English-translation of that link: "Suspiria" has not yet been published in an optimal form. '84 Now has Torsten Kaiser of TLEFilms commissioned to create a new version based on the Italian HD version because the original wheels* are now under lock and may no longer be edited."

Torsten does great work but unfortunately this still seems to be based off the same existing HD master from 2007. A lot of the problems are "baked into" that master, it will be interesting to see exactly what they can do with it.

Chris

* I'm assuming "wheels" is just a wonky internet translation for the original film elements.

Torsten doesn't seem to believe to problems were 'baked into' the master. He states that the existing HD Master isn't the problem, and that a lot of the damage was done at various levels during post processing. He also mentions some interesting things regarding the OCN and 35mm film elements too, which has me curious about Synapse's release (Which we know is getting a new scan from the original negative. I wonder what changed the licensors minds?). The full translation of his post is over at Cult Labs courtesy of zane, for anyone interested in reading.

'84 definitely did what they could. An admirable effort for sure.

Agreed. The last comparison clearly shows that TLE's version not only has superior colour and contrast but also noticeably more detail (the patterns on the walls).

I can confirm that the German subtitles can easily be removed with my Pioneer BDP-170. Torsten Kaiser and TLE films did a remarkable job!

Finally watched it earlier this evening. This is my third Suspiria blu-ray, I previously bought Italian and UK. My personal summation of the German version (for what it's worth): big improvements with colour and contrast throughout, and there's also improvements in detail but...predictably, still more than a few 'blown-out' parts where the dubious source master managed to completely erase significant detail from the film (on wallpaper, some faces, and especially on shots during the last five minutes of the film - particularly during any "lightning" strikes). TLE films deserve a lot of credit for their efforts - can't have been easy considering the source material. Easily the best bd to date but clearly still a lot of room for improvement. Might sound like I'm complaining but I actually really enjoyed my purchase.

yes, this is THE best bluray to date, and probably WILL be the best until the synapse release. it's too bad this couldn't have come out around the time of the uk, italian, french or japanese blu. it looks great.

So the original mono on this release is exactly the same as on the LD's? I sure hope so, would be nice to stop having to sync this to all these releases lol.

Thanks

So I caved and picked up one of the Hardboxes and I have to say I was really impressed. I had my expectations low but I was shocked at how cinematic and organic they were able to make the film look with the old master. Also not only were the colors spot on but they had that 3 strip technicolor glow. The colors are so much more candy coated than the overblown high contrast colors of the previous Blu-rays. Makes me so excited for the new batch of 4k restorations, lets hope they all have that insane Technicolor look. It really was like watching Suspiria for the first time!

Only issue is that the German subtitles were totally forced on my Sony region free player.
