The trek through the ruins of Dale is another scene that should enhance the film, and I expect that will be about 3 minutes long (if included). Then we also have parts like the feast at Laketown and the outfitting of the company, which would improve the continuity (particularly Bofur oversleeping and missing the departure).
Jackson loves to add scenes and snippets which aren't essential for the movie at hand but which often inform the next one, and seeing as they'll be fighting in Dale in the third movie it's odds-on that we'll be getting a proper look at Dale in the Smaug EE. (It'll add some time to their journey up the mountain too, 'cause they get up there awfully quick once they get out of Laketown in the theatrical cut.)

To be honest, I think that's why the EE of ROTK is so bloated with superfluous junk, Jackson just lumped all that stuff in because he didn't have that main context of 'what informs the next movie?' to reign him in. That might work in the favour of the EE of Five Armies though, seeing as it's the bridge between The Hobbit and LOTR, so Jackson will hopefully still be thinking along the lines of adding stuff which ties in with LOTR instead of adding in any old crap for the sake of it.

Something related to the idea of this is will the AUJ EE inform this EE? So, for example, will we learn more about Thranduil's jewels, and about the Dwarven Rings of Power? The latter in particular seems a given with Thrain's arc.

I can't wait. I never did go see this in the theater and decided to just wait for the EE BD. I remember in the theater thinking that the Elf King was an ******* for not helping the dwarves in An Unexpected Journey but by just adding a 10 second scene back in for the EE it made sense.

I'm interested in knowing the specific extras. Various hints by Doug Adams suggest we're going to get a feature on Howard Shore's music, which was sorely missing from the first EE. I can't guarantee that of course, so don't quote me on it.

I love the cover art for the 3D version -- it'll look even hotter if it's lenticular!

Depends on which scenes you are talking about, as he put back in stuff that was in the books, too (Mouth of Sauron, for instance). Whether those scenes were superfluous to the books themselves is another argument. It could be argued the other way that PJ put in superfluous stuff in the Theatrical Version like Legolas taking down the Oliphant.

As much as I love Lord of the Rings, the last couple of times I have watched the extended version of ROTK it's been a little bit of a chore to get through. I've had to watch it over two separate days to make it easier -and it's not only because of the sheer length of the film, but the pacing of this added 'stuff' just makes it too bloated to watch in one sitting.

I think the extended Fellowship, extended Two Towers, and theatrical Return of the King might be the 'best' way to watch these movies (IMO, of course).

Is there going to be a DVD release? Pretty odd that there is no mention as the first film was released on DVD.

If there is no separate release, wouldn't they include it in one of the blu sets? There is a still a huge market for DVDs and a lot of fans having been waiting on this one.
