Hi all. Quick question. What are the dukes best films? Like top 3 to 5. I'm interested in picking some up but not sure where to start. I see there are box sets and even 3 packs. What does everyone suggest? FYI I'm a fan of long epic gritty westerns

In my opinion.
True Grit, Rooster Cogburn, EL Dorado, Rio Bravo, The War Wagon, are all great It is a crime that the Shootest is not available in The US. I do prefer is later movies to his early ones. But they are just as popular. Hope this helps.

The true answer to your question is that it is a matter of taste. Everyone will have a different take. For me, without a doubt, his top 3 are The Searchers, Red River, and Rio Bravo.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, I checked into the UK Circus World. It appears to be Region B locked and I am in the U.S. Even thought about getting a region free player so that I could get titles like this that are not region A.

Hi there. I haven't yet seen all Wayne westerns, but I have been slowly knocking them off the last few years. My recommends might be different than yours. "long, epic gritty western" calls to my mind True Grit and Red River, though I personally find the plot in RR a little idk dated and incomprehensible to a modern sensibility. lots of people and the internet will say the Searchers, which I say is great if you're a fan of murderous racism in your protagonists (I'm not saying if you like Searchers youre a racist)

I'll say:
Rio Bravo/ El Dorado (basically the same movie with the names changed)
North to Alaska (John Wayne does slapstick/ romantic comedy western)
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
The War Wagon
Comancheros (only slightly racist)

I would especially avoid Hondo, I feel it's subpar story wise, though at least Wayne is supposed to be himself half Native American. I don't love Big Jake. Cahill and Train Robbers are decent, if somewhat light for your list.

The Searchers, True Grit, Rio Bravo, Stagecoach, Red River, and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance are all essential John Wayne. I'd start with any of those (I think The Searchers was my first).

It's one of his Republic movies, with the exception of a handful of titles, they never rose above average.

Still fun, but nowhere near the level of work he would do for other studios or directors.

Dakota is still one of his better movies from them though.

I just watched Angel and the Bad Men, this fell into that average movie at least to me.
The past few weeks I tried some Westerns, mostly with John Wayne. I really focused on JW films and loved Stagecoach, Dark Command, The Shootist, Rio Lobo, Rio Bravo, The Searchers, Lady from Louisiana, Red River , The Man Who Shot Liberty Vance.

Im looking into seeing more as well. There are a lot of them, the Mesquiteer series is another batch. Im going to watch Red River Range, A Woman Betrayed..

Anyone who wants to recommend, feel free. Im not into War films, but Wayne Westerns or dramas Ill be glad to check out

Happy New Year fellow collectors !

I really like Angel and the Badman. It's not as good as his classics, but it's the only one of his early films which I watch (and own). YMMV.

Anybody else like "Tall in the Saddle"? I think it's one of Wayne's best early films. I'd buy it on Blu.

I watched "The Sons of Katie Elder" in HD on Netflix. Nice transfer.

The Alamo is on Vudu where you can watch it "free with ads". I watched some of it just to check out the transfer. I wish MGM would do a proper restoration and release it on Blu-ray.

Not gonna happen, the best we'll get, if we get it, will be an adequate restoration of the truncated version.

The original version is long gone.

Actually MGM have a copy of the original version but last I heard it was in very bad shape and MGM would not spend the needed money to restore it. So it does exist but your right we will probably never see it unless MGM decides to do right by their archive.
