"Hansel and Gretel" was shot partly in 3D and partly in 2D, with later stereoscopic post-conversion by Stereo D .

The 3D shots were done by lead Stereographer Florian Maier together with his STEREOTEC team and two Mid Size STEREOTEC 3D rigs with ARRI Alexa cameras.

Classification is tentatively put under "Natively Captured and Converted 3D "Hybrid" Feature"

Side note: To others: The Wirkola film 3D release, should not be confused with the also-in-development film Hansel and Gretel in 3D, set to be produced by Michael Bay.

Thanks for clarifying that. Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters 3D being the theatrical release. I'll have to look into this other one.

The Hobbit 2: Desolation of Smaug 3D will release December 2013, so it'll be a wait. Hobbit 1: Unexpected Journey 3D only 4 days away.

I am psyched for X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST already, the 3D announcement is just the cherry on the top. If they did it in HFR 3D it would be insane!

Very happy they are converting Wolverine. Conversions aren't such a bad thing any more. Not as good as the real thing but they have their own artistic merit.

Default An opinion..

Dont forget Star Trek!

I really dont care how the 3D is done ,only that its done well.

This whole, conversion, native, hybrid stuff bores me now.. I would argue after Titanic and The Avengers that the quality is as good as so-called "native" productions.

I say so-called ,as many cheat with converted shots anyway.

I can tell the difference. Conversions just aren't as pleasing, the shape of people's faces never looks right and they always have fuzzy hair lines.

If done correctly and with enough time, faces look fine imo, but each to his own, I respect your opinion.

I'm waiting for the hopeful confirmation that the recently released trailers for the movies: 'Oblivion' starring Tom Cruise and 'After Earth' starring Will Smith will be given the 3D treatment. Just judging by the trailers, these movies are SCREAMING for the 3D treatment. It would be a shame if these 2 flicks are not given the 3D treatment.....they look like they would be killer in 3D.....but films like Iron Man 3, Wolverine 2, and Star Trek 2 are. Don't get me wrong...I look forward to these flicks and the 3D (if done right) but Oblivion and After Earth just looks so promising to see in 3D,imo. They both have a 'Prometheus' feel and look to it if given the 3D treatment.

Yes, hybrid 3D conversions are the best type of conversion, since they use the CGI assets which are technically native 3D rendered for both virtual cameras, mixed in with the 2D to 3D live action footage. One reason the live action dialog in Avengers looks average in 3D, and the big action CGI shots look strong in 3D. Same for John Carter 3D I'll add.

At the same time, Titanic 3D, is an outstanding effort for what can be done with time and budget for a 3D conversion.

The advantage of Native 3D? A true sense of dimension, as it's using two unique views of the character, getting an angle the other camera missed. 2D to 3D conversions just use the same single character image, doubled and offset. And they're not good with fuzzy, hair edges (warping, mixed layers).

That would be cool. Agreed. No announcement yet sadly. I remember reading about them, and thinking "No 3D version?" Hmmm.

Then the same thing happened with Iron Man 3 and Man of Steel. "No 3D versions?" And soon enough, a 3D version was announced to my relief.

Paul W.S. Anderson's Pompeii is in 3D I think. I remember reading that it was a while ago. Anderson also said he was making all his moves in 3D if I remember corectly. Pompeii comes out next year.

They still have time and might be working on it now. Unless they took the Nolan approach that "2D is already 3D" to paraphrase.

Came back from the midnight showing of Imax 3D The Hobbit in 48fps. All I can say is WOW. Very sharp and clear image. But the trailers before that really impress me.

Star Trek is amazing in the 9 min preview. Oz is amazing. These two really stand out to me on the IMAX 3D. Must watch for me when they come out next year. Star Trek will set a new bench mark for a converted movie.
