Yeah it's been that long, I had a copy on DVD, then I lost it somehow. I obviously have it on Blu-Ray now thanks to Sony's double feature set. I think on my next day off will start with GMK and work my way to Final Wars.

I rank them:

1. GMK
2. Against Mechagodzilla
3. Tokyo S.O.S.
4. Megaguirus
5. Final Wars
6. 2000

Final Wars is the main one that can jump around a bit depending on my mood at a given time.
The reason 2000 ranks so highly for me, is that I was still stung by the bitter disappointment of the 98 movie. The 98 movie, as I have said before, was my first case of nerd rage. Anyway Toho retaliates with what I consider the perfect antidote in 2000 and it brought me great happiness to see Godzilla as he was meant to be.

All was right with world.

Fun fact, I caught the double feature US premiere of Megaguirus and GMK on Sci-Fi when it first aired and even taped them.... good times.

The dubbing was pretty good. And Godzilla chasers are always a good idea I think.

Nice, you'll have to let me know what you think of them.

I can totally understand that though, the '98 movie was, well... let's just say not a good Godzilla movie on any level. Not even really a good movie. So I understand how you and many others must have felt when 2000 came around to save the day.

What, me? No, not at all.

It's funny how different opinions can be. I just find it really dull.

I've been rewatching/rating/reviewing Godzilla films on Letterboxd again. Almost done with the Showa era. I reviewed the Heisei films in depth a year ago so I doubt I'll need to review them again. Might give them another watch though, just to make sure my ratings and rankings are accurate.

Millennium is the most up in the air era for me so I'll probably tackle those 6 films next.

In fact, I just rewatched the Japanese version of 2000, which is definitely inferior to the American version (the only film in the series in which that's the case, for various reasons). Once I rewatch the American version, I'll write a review.

Not that anyone here cares with the exception of MechaGodzilla.

Still, good discussion, everyone. I've enjoyed reading it.

Also, while I think the Japanese cut of the 1954 film is superior overall, the American cut did make some improvements here and there. Just one example: in the Japanese cut, those huge hugh-tension wire towers lining the coast are said to have been erected overnight, which would be practically impossible. In the American cut, they say the towers were already there. There's also some great dialogue in the American cut, like Steve describing Tokyo after the attack, and Ogata's "you have your fears, which may become reality, and you have Godzilla, which is reality."
I can't stand dubbing with the only exception of 2000 so no to Mothra vs. Godzilla.

I've never seen the American cut of 1954 all the way through and have no interest in revisiting it because I couldn't stand to see a masterpiece like that butchered.

But I understand that I'm an extremist in these regards.

A funny anecdote I have of Final Wars is my dad watching about 15 minutes of it roughly in the middle of the film and then asking, "Is Godzilla in this?"

Sure. also I just created an account there. Usually I have just been writing my reviews in a notebook and then just transcribing it to my blog, which I actually haven't anything with in over a year. Got lots of reviews to copy over to.

For Godzilla movies there only two instances that I actually prefer the butchered American dubbed versions. Godzilla: King of the Monsters (1956) My very first introduction to Godzilla, my grandfather bought me the VHS and I have fond memories of watching it.

It was this exact version that he bought me

[Show spoiler]

And Godzilla 1985 for no real reason, I just find it to be highly enjoyable. But other than that, Dubbing sucks, HAIL SUBTITLES!

Cool! I'll follow you on there and you can see the Godzilla stuff I've been up to (just look at my "Godzilla" tag). Don't mind the ratings for the non-Showa movies though, as I plan to rewatch them soon.

Wait, you prefer the 1956 version of the original? Blasphemy!!

Godzilla 1985 was one of the first Godzilla movies I ever watched so I'd see it again for nostalgic reasons, although I'm sure it sucks compared to the Japanese version. Too bad neither are on Blu-ray.

You don't prefer the American version of 2000?

Yeah, it is blasphemy, I freely admit that, but watching the original seems unnatural after all these years.

Godzilla 1985 was actually the very first Godzilla movie I bought for myself on VHS. The opening scenes on the boat were intense to me at the time.

I do actually prefer the American version but that's because the PQ on the Japanese version is horrible in my opinion, the American cut is much better. The Japanese cut looks like a horrible DVD transfer, while the American cut looks like a newer transfer.

Please note I am talking about the US blu-rays, and not any international release.

I can understand that, it makes sense that it'd have a lot of sentimental value to you considering your grandfather bought it for you and it was your introduction to Godzilla.

Godzilla 1985 would be worth watching just for the re-editing to make the Russians look eeeevil and the shameless Dr. Pepper product placement.

Just gotta watch the 54 original a bunch of times and it'll start seeming natural.

So you prefer the Japanese version of 2000 as a film but not as a Blu-ray.

It'd be funny if Criterion remasters and releases Return of Godzilla and includes Godzilla 1985 as a bonus feature, just like they did with the original.

Anyone know when the copyright issues for Godzilla '85 are going to be resolved? I'd love to get it on blu. I've never seen the original Japanese Return of Godzilla version, just the American version with Raymond Burr.

Just the thought of it seems so wrong at this point. I do know that it's a superior version, but I still have to convince myself that it is the way it was meant to be seen.

Pretty much. The less dubbing I have to deal with, the happier I am. I used to prefer dubbed movies to subbed, but somewhere along the way I became an original language snob.... I really don't know when that happened, or why.

Criterion will never release another Godzilla movie, I believe they said as much themselves.

In theory the rights issue should lapse in the next year or so, if I understand correctly. After that we are at Toho's mercy.
