Give it a rest. You've already beat this point into the ground. No one is interested in hearing you repeat yourself for the thousandth time, especially when it will make absolutely no difference for this release.

Probably partially opened up, but definitely partially cropped. You can't shoot 1.33 and NOT crop it to get 16x9.

No thanks. It's a serious issue that shouldn't become the norm. We don't crop pre-1953 movies to widescreen, so we shouldn't do it to TV shows. Glad you don't care about the integrity of the original product, though.

I will continue to talk about it as long and the practice continues, thanks very much. Just the fact that someone above me didn't even realize it was being cropped is why I will continue posting about sad practices like this. People should get OAR no matter what.

Shawn Ryan: What people are going to see in the complete set vs. the season-by-season collections is that while the series was broadcast in 4:3 format it was actually shot in widescreen which is now available in the complete set and that's the biggest change.

Although I feel like that horse will still get beat until the end of time about the aspect ratio of this show.

While I do agree with you for the most part about it being "a serious issue that shouldn't become the norm" I'm not a fantatical zealot on the issue either (though I am certainly a purist at heart), and instead choose to address the matter on a case by case basis.

If the conversion from 4:3 to 16:9 can be done in a way that doesn't ruin the integrity of the material (such as the manner in which The Wire was handled), I'm not going to be up in arms about the decision to alter the aspect ratio to maximally utilize high-def screens. However, if that can't be done, then I'm all in favor of leaving it the f-ck alone.

Can't wait. Hopefully the widescreen presentations are as good as The Wire and Freaks and Geeks.

One needs only see the later, existing DVD releases. They look fine.

I thought Shawn said a while back that they shot the series in widescreen? Honestly it don't bother me either way but I know The Wire was chopped and it looks fine to me. I just wish they would hurry up I really want to re watch it but the DVDs look like crap.

My old DVD review is here. As you can see in the comparisons I made between 4:3 and 16:9, the image isn't chopped, but opened up. I'm usually a OAR purist and all but the 16:9 seems to suit the show quite well, if not better.

The DVDs weren't widescreen? I may be misremembering, but I could've sworn they were.

For reference, this is the set I have. It was a huge PITA and the discs were very easy to scratch.

I can only speak about the Dvd single season releases. But the later seasons did contain a few ep's in widescreen. But only a few.

It doesn't matter that Ryan is on record as stating that the show was shot in widescreen. Bates Motel says that's not correct, and he knows better than the creator of the show.

The original Fox DVD's were 4:3. Later on Sony began distributing the show in slimmer boxes and also in 16:9. The complete series set that eventually followed retained 16:9.

Literally look at the link right above yours. :P

http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/39281...te-series-the/

Every episode looks great in widescreen except for one shot in the pilot. There's one shot where a cameraman gets in the frame, but I think this could be fixed in post. Again, only one problematic shot in the series.

It wouldn't be the first time someone from the crew or film tech is shown for a brief time, regardless of aspect ratio. One could regard it as a feature

I thought you guys were going to discuss Shawn's "dismay" for the international release of the finale, being split into two episodes and potentially have some footage removed(?).

I've never seen the international 2-part version of Family Meeting, but if Shawn Ryan feels that the added material done for the 2-part is not what he wanted, I have zero issue with having the FX version of the finale available. It is a perfect finale.

I have to say, I am surprised to see how much the fullscreen version disfavors Shane!

Question for people who understand the tech stuff better than me -- based on those screenshots, it seems like the show was clearly cropped from 16:9 to 4:3 for the original broadcast, but I assume they would've reframed at least some shots, not just always cropped it to the center... so would it be possible via some sort of seamless branching for a blu-ray to offer it in both versions? Ideally, with a situation like this, where OAR is one thing and IAR is another, I'd prefer to have both. In this specific case, it looks like the IAR would be sufficient for me (honestly, it's all I've ever seen the show in anyway, and it never looked wrong to my unknowing eyes). But it made me curious if that would even be possible.
