I thought Godzilla giving King Kong a radioactive dutch oven was the highlight?

So will they both be good monsters or evil? Very interesting, as both are considered mostly good in their recent films, Godzilla 2014 and Kong Skull Island 2017.

Hard to tell. There's too many possibilities to predict how it will go. Godzilla 2 comes out first so I'm guessing events in it will segue into KK vs Big G. King Ghidorah is the x factor imo. He sorta looms over everything.

Like Dougherty, an interesting and inspired choice. Hope they'll both be allowed a decent amount of creative freedom on their films!

I very much dislike the Wingard stuff that I've seen. Still have to see The Guest, but his segment in VHS, Blair Witch, and You're Next were awful.

Thought this was an odd choice before reminding myself that Michael Dougherty is currently directing the first sequel and Gareth Edwards' only previous feature film was the low-budget Monsters...hoping these guys can bring their idiosyncratic styles to mega-budget filmmaking without studio interference squashing their creativity like Bambi meeting Godzilla...I do remain interested that they've chosen directors with a strong background in horror.

Wingard's filmography is sparse, which is concerning; I think that the producers of this film should have chosen a more experienced director.

Even though Gareth Edwards has been given a lot of flack for 2014's Godzilla, I think that he did an outstanding job with that movie and therefore that he should have been chosen to direct the modern remake of King Kong vs Godzilla; he pulled off the sparse depictions of the King of the Monsters during the second and third acts of 2014's flick tastefully and deliberately in order to emulate 1954's original take on the gargantuan creature, which indicates that he's an intelligent and talented director and not some hack who just wants to tease the audience. Furthermore, the camera work for every action scene is brilliant, as each scene shows the titular beast and the other monsters from the perspectives of human onlookers, thereby providing a realistic and immersive experience. Finally, 2014's flick has a dreary, terrifying tone that convincingly conveys the dread of its monsters and their effect on the world, which I'd love King Kong vs Godzilla to have.

Edwards filmography was more sparse than Wingard's when he took on Godzilla. Your complaint about Wingard makes no sense with your praise of Edwards.

It does make sense. WB gambled on Edwards and won. However, why should they gamble again and risk losing? They should accept their current winnings and leave the casino.

lol but they gambled and won so that is the exact reason they should do it again. Plus Wingard is less of a gamble as he has more films under his belt.

The amount of films a director has done shouldn't be a factor, it's picking the right guy/girl for the job. Edwards has been a lifelong Godzilla fan and has an extensive CG background. He was perfect for the job, unfortunately he didn't deliver the goods. A perfect example would be Colin Trevorrow, he had one film under his belt prior to taking Jurassic World to the biggest opening weekend in box-office history.

Since Blair Witch was one of the biggest disappointments of last year, I'm not exactly buoyed by this news. Hopefully he'll redeem himself.
