I also just noticed that WM also says different for CITS and Nausicaa, the little bubble pops up by pre-order and says "Arrives by: Monday, October 30th" but above that it says arrives by Nov 4th. For the others it says 16th and 21st... weird.

The official street date for those two is Oct 31 according to rightstuf. I don't know what the reason was to separate them from the others.

I thought it was odd to release so many at once and then two more 2 weeks later, seems like they'd have done 2-3 a month to stretch it longer.

Amazon and here both say 24th for them though, does Amazon have some sort of pre-releas exclusivity or something?

I was just on the Disney Movie Club's site, and from what I could tell all the Studio Ghibli titles, with the exception of Spirited Away for some reason, were listed as "While Supplies Last". It's odd because The Wind Rises was among them, but I was under the impression that Disney/Touchstone still owned it?

They probably won't be printing more cause maybe they're gonna lose the license in the near future? Who knows 🤷

Spirited Away is probably the biggest Ghibli title, so they probably pressed a bunch more copies expecting them to sell out so they probably have more to go around on DMC. Them not doing more for The Wind Rises because it's probably going away soon would make sense, and it wasn't that big of a title so they probably think whoever wants it already has it or else they can just wait for the rights to go to GKIDS to get their version.

I wonder if someone could clarify something for me.

GKIDS has stated they will not be re-releasing their current titles, saying they are proud of the work they have done on them.

Does this mean the films are staying with the current distributors (Cinedigm/Universal) or is it possible that these exact discs that they are so proud of and will not be reworking will also be re-released by Shout as part of the deal?

It's a stupid question as I'm 99.9% sure the films will remain with their current studios. However, I want to be 100% certain before I place an order for Poppy Hill, Kaguya, Ocean Waves, Marnie, and Yesterday.

Poppy Hill was released before Universal started distributing them, so that was a Cinedigm/Shout title already (unless it was re-released under Universal once that deal started?)... but theoretically if they ever re-released the Universal GKIDS titles to all be under C/S then they'd most likely be identical except for studio logos/upc codes, like with WB and Paramount going back and forth, since they were GKIDS discs no matter who was putting them out.

I'm almost certain that the GKIDS release will be lossless. Ponyo (which was Disney's first Ghibli BD) was a casualty of Buena Vista's authoring practices early in the BD era of having only the English-language track of a film be lossless, regardless of what said film's original language was.

The same thing happened to Yimou Zhang's "Hero" (2002), which was put out by Miramax at about the same time and has its original Chinese audio in lossy Dolby 5.1 @ 640 kbps as well.

All of the Disney errors were fixed on the box set, so there is no reason why they wouldn't be fixed for these new releases. The only one that isn't fixed is Pom Poko because testicles scare children.

I was just reading through this thread and errors on the Disney discs is news to me!

I have always watched these in Japanese with English subtitles (not subtitles of the English dub, but English subtitles for the Japanese language track). Watching it this way, are there any titles that have "errors". Replacing defect Disney titles would be the only reason for me to consider these new GKids releases (although I will grab the ones not previously released on blu-ray by Disney).

There are a few where the English subtitle track is the same script as the SDH track, aka dubtitles:

Princess Mononoke (which makes no sense because the old black DVD did not have this error)
Kiki's Delivery Service
Castle in the Sky

Nausicaa (this has a problem with the opening credits, where the names of the English speaking actors are burned into the video; I don't think there is a problem with the subtitles)
Pom Poko (as I said in my last post, Disney will not acknowledge the use of tanuki testicles as a plot point)

Ponyo has the lossy JP track if you want to replace for that reason. We also don't know what the deal with the score for Castle in the Sky or the extra lines for Kiki is yet, but if you listen to the JP track Kiki won't be a problem.

The Cat Returns is the only other one I know had dubtitles for its DVD, it seems to have been fixed for the blu-ray.

Wow, thanks for this information, that is super helpful!!!

I am surprised that Disney never offered replacement discs for these issues, especially if they were all fixed for the Amazon exclusive box set. Rather frustrating.
