I don't necessarily believe that the audience doesn't care for the source material. You've gotta realize that these movies are entertainment for all ages: children, teenagers, adults and even seniors. You can't expect most of this demographic to be interested in picking up a comic book. Speaking for myself, the MCU has only made me more interested in the comics that these stories are based around.

Besides, you could say the same thing about ANY movie that was ever adapted from a book. Twilight, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, Hobbit/LotR, etc. Not everyone wants to read a book and watch the movie about it.

Oh. Sorry about that. I never read comics. I had three Spider-Man ones when I was a kid. No idea where they went. And they won't necessarily go away as long as the studios keep giving the audience what they want to see. Westerns are still made today. Not many, but these things tend to go in cycles.
