I imagine the writers were restricted because they were in many cases dealing with real people. We know what happened to Bullock and Hearst and Jane etc.

deadwood in my opinion was a wonderfully spectacular show with extraordinary writing it very hard to have a particular favorite character...they were all excellent but jane and mr wu and al brought a smile to my face..as for the movie..i think it was very satisfying.it needed to be 10 hours just because the characters are fun to watch...did they age the character a bit too much i think so but that is a minor cpmplaint..personally the part that got me and im watching repeatedly over and over is the last 6 minutes...i love the love love the part with jewel and al..maybe because i have cerebral palsy and i love their friendship and trixie is a great character and the hand holding was pure love..that was some of the best film making done

Me too, I damn near teared up when Jewel started singing 'Waltzing Matilda'.

Milch has re-written history on the show before, including
[Show spoiler]Swearengen's demise.

From W. Earl Brown (Dan Dority):

Quote:
Since I’ve been asked numerous times about the “Extra Scenes”, I thought I would explain things as I understand them to be.

The original cut was 2:20 minutes. The Final version was around 1:50. So, yes, there is a half hour of “Deadwood” on the editing room floor.
Quote:
There is talk of the cut scenes being on a Blu-ray release. As a fan myself, I’d love to see the original version alongside the final version. But I doubt that’ll happen... then again, I doubted we’d ever make a movie, so what do I know?

Just hearing about a potential blu-ray release is great news! An extended cut would be amazing. I felt this movie could have used the full 2 hour run time and i'm curious what was cut in that half hour.

Swearengen had a twin brother Lemuel, I'm surprised Milch didn't work that in somewhere.

I thought this was near-perfection, across the board.

[Show spoiler]And yet, it also felt completely superfluous to me. There were really no major advancements in character arcs, and no real surprises. I did like that they revisited the Alma/Seth romantic angle from the series, which I don't recall them focusing on too much once they went their separate ways.

So, it was essentially a reunion show, and that's more than enough to justify its existence. It may have essentially hit the same notes as before but, man, is that music ever so sweet.

Any "to be released on Blu-ray" sightings aside from this one?

I'm keeping an eagle eye out for any pre-order but it's only been about five weeks since the original broadcast. Still early days yet I reckon.

Sorry for not trawling through the thread, but was there a reason that this wasn't given consideration for a theatrical release?

Because it would have badly bombed?

There are a ton of Deadwood fans out there, but HBO was the place for it to air.

Movie was decent. Nothing special.

The show likely would have had a bigger fan following if it didn't usually air with Sopranos and The Wire

I rewatched the Series on BD a couple weeks b4 seeing the movie on BD last night.
I'm very glad they finally did the movie to end the series but the story is not over & needs another movie, which will not happen due to Milch's condition, sadly.

Due to time constraints, a lot was left unexplained. I wonder why it was not a 3 hour movie or a 2 part, 4 hour movie? Maybe budget?

Yep. what it was looing like a great 'epic' in the making fades away slowly. The 1st 30 mins first act looked great.

the choice of digital arri alexa was its undoing to begin with.
Another is less than 3 hrs length. Movie's grandeur is missing like the show.

This needed to an HBO special shot on 70mm for 3 hrs western epic to close out all the holes.

I thought digital AA helps, as Deadwood is chockablock with anachronisms so that "anti-Western" look jibes.

Still chaps my hide that they crammed in so much explicit content and anachronistic language. The beauty of the Western genre was that it still had all the salacious stuff but it was concealed under fun innuendo and visual implication...and that actors didn't swear up a blue streak almost powerful enough to rival that of the average modern teenage girl.
