This definitely sucks, but for me, I think the only thing I’m really missing are the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. I can’t think of any other live action Disney movies that are must-haves on the format.

I wonder if Nightmare Before Christmas is included in this too.

Damn. Worst decision Disney has ever made by far. Does this include Indiana Jones? Or does Paramount still have a piece of that?

I hate the idea of never having Lost in 4K.

There’s a digital-only SKU for PS4?

He also posted via the same source that they were both coming to 4K UHD a month before they were officially announced, so they appear to be reliable.
Or they just made a lucky guess? Or maybe his source was privy to this specific release info, but not to Disney's overall home entertainment marketing strategy?

None of this can be verified, so it remains speculation.

Wasn't there? If not, I stand corrected. I may be thinking of the Xbox One S.

Point being, SONY's not made digital only the only option with a console or handheld release since (as an aside they seem to have dropped out of the handheld market entirely). The news that the upcoming PlayStation 5 will have a 4K drive is welcome indeed, in addition to continuing this trend.

I feel like this. I turn off the lights and internet-connected gadgets, put in a disc, and for two hours I can have as close to an isolated cinematic experience as possible in at least something approaching the best quality that could reasonably be delivered to consumers. Streaming just always feels a bit... cheap. I don't know, maybe it's just my associations. Social media being the main entertainment platform, everything else is just food for the feed or passing time. Watching movies on a phone on the way to work. Live-tweeting movies. Stuff like that.

I really cannot see The Godfather of all movies not being one of those exceptions.

In my opinion, Disney has never been customer friendly.
They can't release Song of the South in the world we live in. That's not Disney's fault if people are idiots.

Toy Story 2, Splash, Fantasia, ... Those are hard to justify.

What censoring happened in Toy Story 2?

Fantasia is not hard to justify at all, the censorship could have been done better but keeping it would have been really uncomfortable.

I can also understand Toy Story 2 considering what happened with Lasseter.

I'm watching on a large screen, but even 1080p streaming lacks a 'solidness' and stable look to the image vs Blu-ray 1080p. Maybe I need more bandwidth (although 1080p doesn't take a lot), but I not even talking about artifacts and other issues. Almost like a thinness to the image...something less natural.

Don't know what the Lowry's garbage is. I do know that the iTunes version has Dolby Vision.

I don’t “buy” digital copies anymore. I was buying iTunes movies till my Daniel Craig movies suddenly went from 4K to HD for a while with no eta for them coming back. Now the Goonies has gone from 4K to HD till the end of the month and digital movie buyers are OK with temporary loss of movies.

I have only used someone else’s Disney+ account ( a friend who was visiting) and I would not support any steaming service including Netfux. I have other people’s logins (that they share willingly) and I still don’t use them lately because I keep the internet bandwidth for my kids who use it more.

I prefer UHD and when they stop making them I may stop buying them but I won’t switch to leasing movies from a subscription service. I won’t support that.
EXACTLY! Most people I say this to never understand. You never truly "own" a digital purchase, it's more like a license fee and you have no control of the quality. I noticed this also with Robert Downey Jr's 'Sherlock Holmes' films on iTunes, they were 4K, then went down to HD for a while and just recently went back to 4K. I know it has happened to other movies as well. It's really annoying. Plus, the quality of a stream compared to a disc is night and day for me.

Even with video games I refuse to go full digital. I do not trust these companies.

It's hard to justify because it's damaging someone's art/work. That's also censorship, and that's unacceptable.

Song of the South is simply buried somewhere because people can't take it nowadays. It's self-preservation, and I can accept that.

Streaming is usually around 5-20 Megabits/sec on average depending on whether it's 1080p or 2160p. Unless you have a bare bones streaming plan, bandwidth is not your issue. I've upgraded to a JVC D-ILA 4k projector and streaming just doesn't hold up at all.

When I'm close to my computer monitor and watching streamed content, I can see all kinds of compression garbage and banding in the darker areas as well.

Fantasia's centaur sequence was actually censored by Walt Disney himself as even he had second thoughts about the horrible caricature of a black girl in that section of the film. Disney wasn't exactly the purist soul in the land and that still got to him over time and so it was zoomed in and cropped.

Song of the South is far less racially insensitive than Gone With the Wind and Birth of a Nation, to name but two films that have not been taken out of circulation. They could put a Leonard Maltin "explanation" before the film about movies of the day, as they did with some of the more bigoted Disney shorts on the DVD tins, but at least restore it and let people decide for themselves.

Catalog titles will not keep me as a paid subscriber to Disney+, original content like the Mandalorian will.

However, Disney does not know that. A win is a win in their book. Don't succumb.
