I don't think the handover killed it as much as the shift in film making technology and audience expectations created a massive aesthetic gap. It just got to a point where you couldn't reconcile that rough and tumble style with slick production values and special effects. It doesn't come close to his best work, but Ringo Lam's Wild City is as close to an old school Hong Kong movie made with modern production values and it just feels off. Same with all those Z Storm ICAC thrillers which on paper could have been made in the late 90s/early 2000s.

The handover doesn't really effect movies that much until the mid-2000s when there's growing demand for co-productions because you could have massive budgets and make money from the growing Chinese audience. There's still good stuff happening then and an attempt to make actual quality films to break into a kind of prestige international market. Hong Kong itself isn't doing THAT badly either and many people who did leave because of the handover went back because it seemed like all that fear was unfounded.

It's just it got worse and worse in the 2010s when the Chinese market really became a thing and the co-production became nothing more than a formality. Of course, a certain someone taking power then changes things completely and we get to the cluster**** Wolf Warrioring of today.

To be fair I'd just sat thru As the Light Goes Out when I made that post... so you'll understand my bitterness...

Yes, though it was the main reason why I grabbed a region-free player for these films. It was worth every penny to get these films. If your finances allow it, I would strongly advise grabbing a region free player.

Same here. While I haven't been able to get as many titles as I would like to this year I have added quite a considerable amount of films to my region B collection courtesy of these great releases by the two labels and the many great people behind the scenes who are doing superb work.

Warner in a podcast last month, did say they were releasing another Hong Kong film via The Warner Archive Collection line, but that it wasn't Pedicab Driver which they released on DVD via the WAC line but did leave it open that it could come in the future.

I think you could be right. It was pointed out a couple months ago that Drunken Master II is now available digitally from WB on Amazon and Vudu.

Hopefully this is a sign that the Miramax death crypt has broken open and we will start seeing stuff like Police Story 3 escape to other labels.

I remember first seeing him in the Wong Fei Hung Series when I was in HK back in the mid 90s then of course movies like The Blade, The Black Sheep Affair, Body Weapon and Fist Power. He's done a few recent films that have gone straight onto streaming platforms in China, he's still active but can't remember seeing him in any big recent productions.
