It's possible, but somehow I doubt Arrow plays around with fake stereo labeled as 2.0. Tenebrae is actually 1.0 mono on Arrow's release. There's no shame in it. I don't see them doing like Scorpion did with their release of Opera.

INFERNO was an early Arrow release, before they changed their ways and got much more quality conscious (their 2K remaster of Fulci's ZOMBIE was the turning point)- and beyond that, encoding mono as 2.0 is the "standard" practice for most companies anyway, it's not about trying to label the sound as "fake stereo". Beyond that, I just put on my Arrow Blu-ray of Lucio Fulci's THE BEYOND, also from this early Arrow era, and indeed, both the English and Italian mono tracks on it are encoded as DTS 2.0.

I doubt the Arrow INFERNO has an actual Dolby Stereo Italian track when every other release has the Italian track in mono, and it being encoded as 2.0 certainly is not proof that it's actually Dolby Stereo. Only looking at the waveforms of each channel or playing it back and decoding it to surround would show that. Does it collapse entirely to the center channel when played back in "surround"? If so, then it's mono, just like the German and Blue Underground releases are.

Chris

Will have to test it. If the other releases did that then it’s possible they did too. I’m a bit surprised arrow would do that. It’s not exactly a clean practice to pass mono off as stereo, but yes it’s a somewhat old release now.

Uhm, but it IS a clean practice. MOST companies encode mono tracks as 2.0. Now, if they were to advertise said tracks as stereo? Yes, that would be shady*, but most companies encode their mono tracks as 2.0. Criterion and the modern-day Arrow seem to be among the outliers in their trend of encoding mono tracks in actual 1.0 while most companies still do their mono tracks at 2.0.

Chris

*Not exactly "shady" so much as a big technical mistake that to my knowledge has never been corrected, but the sound on Arrow's Blu-ray release of Brian Yuzna's BRIDE OF RE-ANIMATOR is indeed supposed to be stereo (the German company that did the work even make a big deal about how they "restored" the stereo track in the booklet included with the limited edition), but it is actually mono. A real shame...

I had no idea that 2.0 mono was a thing. Thanks for the explanation.

I thinks it's more difficult than that: Even is the main actor is an English speaker and dubs himself / herself, when most of the rest of the cast sound horrivble in English this will (for me at least) hurt the movie more than if the main was well dubbed in Italian and the overall cast just sounds way better.

Personally, I've found this to be usually the case, but you might obviously have a different opinion.

Yeah, I see it differently. Take The Bird with the Crystal Plumage - Tony Musante is in nearly every scene, so I wanna hear Tony Musante. The supporting/peripheral characters are less important to me.

And I'm quite used to hearing stilted English dubs in Italian genre films, so it doesn't really bother me. I don't hold the dubs to the same standard that I would other types of acting. For me, it's no different than watching movies with dated wardrobes or obviously phony special effects - I accept it on its own terms. It's no problem for me at all.

That's interesting. Even if it doesn't work for me that way (unlike the dates wardrobes or special effects), I can definitely see your point.

After the Last Night in Soho trailer dropped, been on a mini-Argento binge and revisited Deep Red (Export version) last night. Holds up pretty well and the Export version remains my preferred cut - there are a few scenes I do miss from the director's cut but the tonally-off romantic subplot definitely was not one of them.

Not outright my favorite Argento giallo (that would be Tenebrae, hands down), but Deep Red still remains a seminal film in the genre and I definitely will be double-dipping with the 4K Arrow release.

Certainly. Django 4K, Battle Royale 4K and now these Argentos? Happy times.

Deep Red seems very likely to be announced next month as it now shows up as DRUHD in today's new notes.

Also for us Argento fans there's a potential Phenomena as PUHD, and maybe with some luck Four Flies as there are now two FUHD's, one for January and one February 2022. I'd be so happy if one of them is Four Flies on Grey Velvet.

Yes, because physical media is dying. No company wants to be stuck with overstock, especially with the high cost of UHD replication. You'd think people know that by now instead of pretending physical media is doing just as fine as ever.
