Simple had Whitfield not attacked the ranch for the land Spencer and Alex would have stayed in Africa and never gotten on the boat to come home. They never would have been separated thus the entire events of the boat in Season 1, Spencer's arrest, Alex being returned to England, and the subsequent events of season 2, Alex running away, Alex getting robbed, Alex being assaulted, arrested and taking that trip in the car, Alex getting frostbite, all would not have taken place.

Remember in Season 1 Cara wrote to him to come home the ranch was under attack, I believe she told him about Whitfield in that letter.
