I think we'll probably never see the words "thedvdwars" muttered on an HD-DVD site again from now on. Funny how all of a sudden this site doesn't matter.

It is absolutely devestating now. HD-DVD is getting blown out of the water. I will predict that the term DVDWars will be a instant ban soon at AVS!!

The best thing about this is that both sites are apparently run by proper HD DVD fanbois trying to show HD DVD supremacy, I wouldn't be surprised to see both sites go down soon.

I used to post on AVS until I decided that the forum was too childish for me, but if you would like to, feel free to use these numbers.

Crank cracks the top 100!

3:00pm EST

BD is exploding. And LGF will be absolutely thrilled. Any chance they were thinking of going neutral will be ended by these results.

It's going to get very quiet over there soon.

LG combo -> Not a full HD DVD player
Meridian player -> No, that's wrong -> Ah, yeah we're helping Microsoft
Studios will go neutral -> More intense pro-BD statements + Universal running silent
30GB + HD DVD bandwidth is enough -> Hey, we are BD spec too
Newline will release LOTR HD DVD exclusive -> Newline goes THD
HD DVD is selling 3:1 -> BD was 20% ahead two weeks ago
125K players + 150K add-ons -> 175K of everything, including HP and laptops

It has been a complete disaster of a week for HD DVD.

But wait, they have a knight in shining armour, Chinese manufacturers willing to make their players for very little money, in return for nothing but their SOULS!!!!!

On a more serious note there are still some people that think this was a disaster for BD and a great success for HD DVD, a no show by Meridian, Onkyo or the Chinese manufacturers in question, only slides on ppt. No titles. BD had four Prototype players and one G2 player (2 Sony, 1 Sharp, 1 Hitachi, and the Samsung BD-P1200) on show, not on a ppt slide where you can't check if they are real or not. More fervent Studios looking to end the war, and hundreds of titles, lots of them blockbusters.

And a pile of people that if they believe that, will sit on their hands and wait for that, and the word on TL51.

HD DVD sales will now completely dry up. Players (waiting) and discs (worrying about investing more in a dying format).

It is going to get rather ugly when the HD DVD super-zealots find themselves completely surrounded by people that went out and bought a PS/3 and are amazed at how well it performs.

I'm already seeing people who are still convinced HD DVD offers better PQ saying they'll buy the BD disc of neutral studios because of uncertainty, convenience (boot time) and performance (no skips or lockups).

I just can't wait to see how they spin these numbers over there now. What are they going to do next? Call it a minor blip and blame it on a slight surge in PS3 sales due to the impending Black History Month in February or something?

I fully expect PS3 sales to be low in Jan to Feb, not a lot of people have money left after Xmas, but considering that the sales are still strong-ish, just goes to show the power of the Playstation brand.

People seem to forget that January, more-so February are the worst months for retailers, nothing will sell, PS3, X360, Bravia TVs, Dell Computers, nothing. Only when we hit March will the strain of Christmas have worn off and retailers worried about their bottom line will cut prices, or in the case of the PS3, offer 2 free games/accessories to make the deal more attractive and start bringing the revenue in.

Sony also flooded the distribution channels so they could claim they shipped 1 million to North America by the end of 2006. That was an number disconnected from the instantaneous demand.

I do expect a slowdown in gamer demand for the PS/3 as they await the big titles. In the meantime, it allows all those people flooding out of HD DVD a chance to pick up the best value ever released in A/V.

Europe is coming soon. Hopefully the quantity will be extremely robust into that, and then Europe will fall too. Clean sweep. Mop up operations begin.

Europe is very loyal to Sony, they will buy the PS3 regardless of the price, and for us in the UK I don't think £425/£350 including sales tax (which runs at 17.5%) is a bad deal, especially since they will all be f/w upgraded out of the box and will have killer games like DMC4, Lair and Resistance will still be good.

Sony, in the past have treated Europe very well, Laptops get released here first, the XBR LCD Bravia TVs came out here first (which is why they use a slightly older engine). The problem with a product like the PS3 is that Europe has so many languages and regionalisations that launching here takes a lot more effort than somewhere like NA where you need English, Spanish and French (can't forget about our Canadian cousins can we). In Europe you need to add German, Russian, Italian, Greek, and a bunch of eastern European languages to the software. So I don't hold it against Sony that they didn't release the PS3 here in November.

On the Media side, now that Sony BMG have got past that whole Rootkit fiasco they have got a lot of good bands signed up here in the UK and in Germany. Their Movies all have worldwide release dates, as do their DVDs, they do Superbit editions which I like (very good for upscaling IMHO).

They do have a problem with arrogance, but this year hit them so hard, Batteries, delayed PS3 from March to November, recovering from rootkit, PSP not doing too well in JPN, that their arrogance will be toned down for a while now. This year will see the best of Sony, from the 10bit Bravias, to the launch of the PS3 in the EU, and Spiderman 3.

Sorry if I rambled a bit!

Default Blu-ray will continue to pile on

I also think PS/3 sales (and hence BD sales) will get a big boost in the March timeframe because many people in the gamers' demographic plan to use their tax refunds for a purchase.

There are also several bigger PS/3 game titles coming out around that time, as well as the anticipation of some big guns on Blu-ray.

HD-DVD folks will really be demoralized at that point.

What is with Amazon and not keeping BD titles in stock?

4:00am - Superman Returns (BD) is at 299
5:00pm - It is out of stock (again) and has fallen to 646

Take out the bullet title, and the rankings drop like a stone.

Amazon better decide soon what business they are in. Selling discs, or propping up HD DVD.
