I've actually been posting more in the Laser Replacement thread than this one. Apparently there are some jokers that are selling bad lasers online so after they use my guide their PS3 still doesn't work.

Which ones have you ordered? I haven't really found ones that I found worth getting mainly because I already owned 1 movie from the 3-4 pack or something.

EDIT: Just thinking. If we continue to casual chat, we should use this thread:

Default PS3 will not take discs in

All of this, and it still didn't spin or read the disc, so I know it's the laser now. Now I've got a spare kem-400aaa deck, and need a new laser, and I'll have to do all of that over again.

Ugh, it'll be worth it, though. Thanks for the help, Mike. I'll be back around, I'm sure.
I am having this same problem. It will not take discs in at all. I have been trying to mess with this thing for days. Does anyone know a solution for this? Thanks.

Take a look at my video and compare your PS3 to mine.

Everything is exactly the same. I actually looked at that video before I posted on these forums. Do you happen to have any other suggestions? I am still stumped.

Default I did what you said could cause "problems"

First of all very helpful forum you have here.....I recently had the "no disc reading problem" started to freeze mid game and evolved into not reading disc at all. Im out of warranty so after all the restores and resets and prayers I decided to try cleaning my lens. I followed some videos and all was smooth...first attempt did'nt work so I tried again and again.....during my haste I started to remove components and realized game was still inside. At a certain point the game sprung loose.....I tried re-inserting and screwing back together but after powering up, the game wont eject..(makes a quick noise and sticks) I realize the grey and white arms on the upper and lower deck/tray (black) have to align a certain way. The little grey hook things just beyond flap are up. Im guessing the arms on bottom are locked in by electric gears and the uppers are spring loaded. How should I go about fixing this issue.......I did'nt want to go over my head and damage any parts.....Thanks for all your effort!!!!!........P.S.....I HAVE 40G

Does it have the red and black wire connecting the two halves of the laser deck? If so, make sure its not severed or else that could cause issue.

Go ahead and look at this video and make sure that your PS3 disc drive operates exactly like mine in my function test.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIg6rFSpswc

Its what I did to fix the same exact issue you are having with opening the disc drive while a disc was still in it.

Yes...I have watched the video...My problem is that the top and bottom of my drive is currently opened/unscrewed. should I re-screw it without a disc inside on the spin wheel....or do I have to try and hold the disc in place upside down from top half of drive then sandwich it back down on the bottom portion...Or do the bottom gears/ and arms work alone without having to align with top side arms.....It seems that If I try to re-sandwich without disc the halves dont exaclty line up flush....I'll figure it out eventually....It's not like I have playing the game to look forward to....my lens is shot (I guess)....thanks

You need to place the two halves back together without a disc. You need to 'work' the disc drive until you get the two halves to line up. Make sure it looks exactly like mine when you do this.

Default I got it Fixed...

I finally got the load tray working properly.....(the solution)....I had to remove grey metal housing....leaving all ribbons and power plug attached to drive....then unscrew top half of disch drive.....hold the top half folded open then power on the ps3..(no disc inside)..I was able to hit eject and the bottom gears/hooks electrically moved to the empty position...I was able to
re-sandwich top half together (since its arms are automatically spring loaded empty)...I then tested by inserting disc...it accepted and eject perfectly.....Now I just have to find the best way to get replacement lens (I read something like KEM-400AAA) is the part I need....

Any suggestions besides Ebay.....Thanks For your replies!!!!

Sorry to pest but If I get no light from the lens itself does that mean its burnt or bad....If I researched correctly the reason my disc isn't spinning is because the lens doesn't read it???

I'm not sure as I've never turned on my PS3 while its open and do not recommend that to anyone. Actually it seems like that is the trend for those that are experiencing issues after replacing their laser as those that are testing it without the PS3 fully enclosed.

IF YOU ARE GOING TO TURN ON YOUR PS3 MAKE SURE YOU HAVE IT COMPLETELY COVERED!!!

However if it only plays CDs and DVDs and no Blu-rays, then it sounds like you need the laser replaced.

Here is where you can get lasers.

Hey guys,

Yellow light of Death for me last night.

I am out of warranty so I have two options:
  • Send it to Sony, get a refurb, $162
  • Send it to eBay seller, get it fixed for $80-100 (refund less shipping if they fail)

Advantage to eBay is I keep my data.

What do you guys think?

Well, if you trust the eBay seller, then I say go for it.

However if you do not trust them and have no dealings or know of anyone who has had dealings with them, go to Sony.

Also, have you tried replacing the hard drive in the PS3 yet?
