I'm doing the same, but more because I'm not arsed about Thunderbolts. I'm a completist, so I will get this at the same time as FF, a movie I absolutely loved.

I may have seen this movie for the last time in theatrical 3D yesterday, and it was an awesome way to celebrate Jack Kirby's birthday. The 3D in the movie will never cease to blow me away, especially in the Galactus scenes and the space chase.

It's coming back to Dolby screens starting today, so planning to watch it a few more times in Dolby, as well.

This movie never ceases to be jaw-dropping imho.

It'll be on digital in a couple of weeks so I would expect the Japanese editions to be announced around then.

It will cease to be jaw-dropping when it is released on disc, given the times you have watched it in IMAX I am sure you be more aware of the lessened visual impact than most people. If there's a whole version of the film in 1.90:1 aspect ratio then Marvel need all the scorn in the world heaped on them for only putting the film out letterboxed on disc.

This is just one of two MCU movies that have used the full 1.43:1 aspect ratio in IMAX screens, and imho it is all but impossible to replicate that effect at home, even if the streaming/disc version tries to replicate the use of different ARs, it really isn't quite the same.

The other, more intimate aspects of the movie should translate to home viewing just fine, tho.

Who said anything about 1.43:1? You can't replicate an IMAX screen at home but most people have 1.78:1 TVs. I project onto a wall so the bigger the better. Marvel went to the trouble of making three different aspect ratio versions of the film. You'd have to be mentally ill or a letterbox purist to argue that the 1.90:1 version isn't be the best version for most home setups be they 2D or 3D. I mean, wouldn't you?

I mean, I will always wish there was a way to faithfully replicate the exact theatrical AR at home, but since that is clearly not possible, we all have to live with the best possible compromise

To me, 2.40 or 1.90 both represent a bit of a compromise.

Of course, but unless you have a fixed 2.40:1 screen all that version offers is the same as the 1.90 version except with significantly larger black bars over the top and bottom of the picture. And yet that's the version Disney/Marvel are putting out on disc. They want to put out inferior products to in theory benefit their digital platform. The one they have to keep raising the prices on.

I've actually grown rather fond of the 2.40:1 framing of the movie, when the full IMAX version isn't available, as it is the version you get when you watch it in 4DX or Dolby, and it is slightly less impressive than the one with 1.43 scenes, but pretty damn near as enjoyable in most other ways.

Of course it would be nice if both of the more regular versions of the movie were available, but I have learned over the years to embrace one of the central tenets of Buddhism when it comes to things like this: all suffering is based on desire, eliminate desire, and you eliminate suffering.

I know, it sounds corny, but it works for me

You can desire nothing and still be made to suffer but let's park the religious stuff, somewhat back on topic I'd rather eliminate films coming in multiple aspect ratios.

Just from a filmmaking perspective a director should choose an aspect ratio for their film and that should be the aspect ratio, whether it's fixed or shifting. Logic dictates that you must have a preference because to have no preference means you don't really care about what your film looks like or ensuring your audience gets to see your vision. In that scenario as a Marvel director you have no vision. It's just slop to dish out, some get more slop than others but what do you care, your job is just to dish out the slop.
