Good choice!

What I really want is some Supremes, Temptations and especially Curtis Mayfield on 180 or 200-gram.

John,

You may wish to slow down on the heavy vinyl and try to find some of the original pressings in near mint condition. The newer pressing though quieter just may not sound as good as the originals (the EQ and such just isn't right it seems).

I have many of the originals that I've recently purchased, but I've had them for going on 20-25-30-35 years, so I'm trying the newer heavier vinyls. I agree though...they may not sound quite the same. Having said that, I don't beleive that my system or future system I suppose would be as delicate in making those observations. And I'm also still buying used vinyl of old classics as well.

Saturday 6/13/09 will go down as one damn good day in the life of Fred. My wife and I took the long drive down to the university district in uptown NOLA to look through the used vinyl section of "The Mushroom." (It's an iconic record/head shop to the locals, has been in continuous operation since the late 60's).

Before I knew it, two hours had gone by and the following is what we walked out with. In no particular order:

1. Gerry Rafferty, City To City
2. Spandau Ballet, True
3. David Gilmour, About Face
4. Jean Luc Ponty, A Taste For Passion
5. Jean Luc Ponty, Enigmatic Ocean
6. Alan Parsons Project, Eve
7. Alan Parsons Project, The Turn Of A Friendly Card
8. Bad Company, Run With The Pack
9. Bad Company, Desolation Angels
10. Dan Fogelberg, Souvenirs
11. Jon & Vangelis, Private Collection
12. Bruce Hornsby, The Way It Is (Sealed)
13. The Doobie Brothers, What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits
14. The Doobie Brothers, One Step Closer
15. Tony Banks, A Curious Feeling
16. Tony Banks, The Fugitive
17. Mike Rutherford, Smallcreep's Day
18. Steve Hackett, Cured
19. Henry Mancini, The Best of, Vol. 2
20. Soundtrack, My Fair Lady (wife's choice)
21. Soundtrack, Out Of Africa (wife's choice)
22. Sountrack, Saturday Night Fever
23. Firestone Presents, Your Favorite Christmas Music, Vol. 4
24. Goodyear Presents, The Joyous Songs of Christmas
25. Glenn Miller, The Unforgettable Glenn Miller (6 LP Boxed)
26. The Greatest Recordings Of The Big Band Era (Archive Collection, Boxed)

Each seems to be in excellent condition, notwithstanding the expected surface dust, etc. They could all use a good cleaning naturally.

Total Price Paid: $46.24. That's right, an average of $1.78 per LP, sales tax included!

We cleaned up and listened to What Were Once Vices, Mancini, Out of Africa, Saturday Night Fever, Jean Luc Ponty, Gerry Rafferty, Spandau Ballet, Disk One of Glenn Miller and a few tracks of both Alan Parsons LP's. They all sounded amazing! The Big Band Boxed Set looks as though they had never been played. BTW, the are a deep maroon color. Anybody know if that's significant? Both of the boxed sets have all the inserts as well. The Doobie Brothers, What Were Once Vices even had the original full size poster inside (in perfect condition too).

I had to pass on Yes' 90125 as I could not find a copy in acceptable condition. Same for Alice Cooper's Killer. I had hoped to find School's Out, but came up empty. Also struck out on Elton John's Captain Fantastic which I had hoped to replace my old lost copy.

I figure we hit about 1/3rd of the collection. Had to leave as my calf's started cramping up! (Who says this isn't a sport). I'll be heading back over to pick up another 50 or so in the next month or two. The shop owner tells me the stock is constantly changing with new LP's coming in all the time.

It's what REAL Nirvana is all about.

What a steal. Some good vinyl you got. Hopefully they are excellent to near mint condition. Too bad about the 90125 LP. Really good LP but not my favorite variation of the band.

Gotta love those days! Went to a Record Fair last year in Steve's (dobyblue) hometown and walked away with about 20 for $50 or thereabouts. Hoping to go again this summer!

I'm going to the record fair this Sunday at the farmer's market. There's supposed to be over 20 vendors showing up. Although I don't have much cash flow left after last week.

Sat night's show was #41 for me...and the best one yet. Not just because it's the most recent, but despite it being an album tour they busted out 7 tour debuts for us and a 4 song encore (usually it's just 3) finishing with a real rarity called Halloween that wasn't on the setlist. Dog tired now though.

2 45rpm lps by Coltrane - Ballads and Live At the Village Vanguard. Both mastered by Bernie Grundman. Nice gatefold covers. They sound incredible.

I just ordered the Oasis box-set and the Mike Oldfield Ultimate Tubular Bells from Amazon UK.

8 double LP's in the Oasis set, 5 discs in the Mike Oldfield set including a new vinyl pressing of Tubular Bells and a high resolution DVD-Audio 24/96 5.1 mix done in 2009 by Oldfield in the Bahamas, differing from the 2003 DVD-A because he's done this 5.1 mix with the original elements.

Mike Oldfield set - http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/..._ya_oh_product

It lists for £61.98 but that's got VAT included so when you select a North American destination it's only £53.90

Oasis box-set - http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/..._ya_oh_product

This lists for £156.59 but is £136.17 without VAT for NA customers.

Total shipping? A paltry £4.07 for a total of £194.14 for 17 pieces of vinyl and 4~5 CD/DVD/DVD-A's, not bad at all.

Very cool! I'm a Mike Oldfield fan, so I might have to ask The Boss to get this one for my birthday.

This'll make you green: I've actually been to The Manor, in Oxfordshire, England, where Tubular Bells was recorded! It's no longer a recording studio; Rich Branson sold it years ago and apparently there's some covenant preventing current and future owners from operating a recording studio there. I have no idea why.

Thanks again Steve for posting this.

To any GTA/Toronto members reading this....it is well worth a trip. I went last year and the vendors were great, the selection was phenomenal, the quality was suburb and they love to bargain........don't take the listed price. I walked away with many albums for just $2 a piece that are VG+ to NM (vinyl).

Good news that's a way from being confirmed, but it sounds very positive.

Record Store Day was so successful this year that at the recent NARM meeting in CA there was quite a bit of discussion of doing a smaller version on every 3rd Saturday. Positive response so far from Pete Yorn, Beastie Boys, Green Day, etc.

Apparently it would be on a substantially smaller scale, but would have a handful of exclusive record store releases for each 3rd Saturday and hopefully some vinyl exclusives...even if they're only timed like Vitalogy was for Pearl Jam in 1994 coming out 2 weeks before the CD.

Nice to hear Please keep us posted Steve!

Damn I just got a copy of "The Extremist" by Joe Satriani that was listed NM sleeve and NM vinyl. The sleeve was about VG and the vinyl looked very dusty...but had no scratches.

Got it home tonight and gave it a clean and I've just finished listening to both SIDE A and SIDE B all the way through - the play grade is MINT easily.

Sweet, Satriani never sounded so good.
