[QUOTEWe knew it was coming, and just like its relatives the Onyx and the Gemini, yet another unreleased model has managed to escape the confines of RIM's Waterloo headquarters. This time, however, it's the Storm 2, which we've heard has been internally codenamed "Oden." We've also caught wind that this model pictured is of the GSM flavor, and yes, it's indeed packing WiFi in addition to GPS according to one of our sources. As far as that rumored "new approach to text entry," it sounds like the keyboard has been tweaked but isn't a radical departure from the first generation. From the photos, it seems that RIM has advanced in the war on buttons and axed the bottom four in favor of some touch-sensitive controls. The real improvements, however, appear to be under the hood, as the whole device reportedly runs much faster and smoother than the current model. We can't confirm these specs, but with the Tour coming this summer, and the Storm 2 hopefully making an appearance before the holiday shopping season, looks like you Verizon BlackBerry fans might not have to be that jealous of your GSM brethren after all. One more pic after the break.][/QUOTE] ![]() |

Won't know for sure until one can try both in person, of course, but think they're 100% wrong on the keyboard. All the early reviews for the N97 say the keyboard is great. The D-pad on the left side is unconventional for Nokia but that's also every game controller and handheld gaming system have it, as well.
They call N97's resolution "odd" but it's 16:9., which is a standard. I do think 16:10 might have been better. More resolution is always better, but can't save an otherwise subpar phone (see SE Xperia X1 and the older WinMo Samsung Omnia). Charging is done via micro-USB on the N97, so not sure how they missed that. Supposedly they did a prototype with metal hinges, but weight increased from 150g to 215g. Early reviews say it seems very stable and solid. long term reliability who knows. Nokia has been hit and miss with their numpad sliders (n95) and N85 quality control was largely abyssmal. Hopefully this one counters that trend, which early reviews seem to bear out. Some of the early reviews: http://www.mobile-review.com/review/nokia-n97.shtml (in Russian, which is the only place the videos are... even in russian they're quite illuminating, though. here's the google translation): http://translate.google.com/translat...hl=en&ie=UTF-8 http://ericscorner.blogspot.com/2009...7-preview.html http://www.mobileworld.com.my/v2/ind...Nokia_N97.html There are a whole bunch of youtube videos. If I wasn't getting this, I'd probably be going to the Samsung Omnia HD i8910. Lack of AT&T 850 3G band would be a very serious concern, though. |
