He was sentenced to 4 months in federal prison back in 2007 for lying to the FBI about his relationship with Anthony Pellicano, but through an appeal that conviction was vacated. So, he never actually spent any time in prison even though he was ordered to surrender for incarceration by 01-15-2008. The prosecution in the case is trying to charge him a second time though.

Well then, that's the rub, isn't it. You see, with all things "art", that lies in the eye of the beholder. This is a debate that has raged amongst cinecista for a very long time. I have seen/read debates on this subject on discussion boards going back to laserdisc days on BBS and Compuserve pre-internet.

Not everyone considers film in general "art". Most do agree filmmaking is an artform, but mainstream cinema rarely transcends commerce to be widely considered "art". And that is what movie making, as practiced by all major studios, really is, commerce. There is an old cliche that I happen to dislike, but like most cliches, is mostly true. They don't call it "show art".

In the case of Predator, not even at one's most generous would I ever consider it "art". At best, this film is mainstream entertainment and nothing more.

Predators looks like crap. Rehash of the same tired formula.

That's pretty fuzzy logic there, trying to make a point.
Just to chime in, with the technology Blu-ray offers, I don't see why studios can't offer the ability to turn grain on or off. I mean, 50GBs, with plenty of processing power...either way, fingers are crossed this turns out well. Considering you can get this for about $20 (or possibly less) and the $7.50 in movie cash, you can't really go wrong if you haven't bought the first one yet, like myself.

Well, it is a lil bit of the same formula. It does feature Predators . They have to hunt somebody, and the AVP movies kinda failed, more or less.

I think the majority of people wanted to see the Preds where they belong, back in the jungle. I think it's an interesting concept:

Capture some of the world's most dangerous killers; which would include soldiers/mercs, organized crime hitmen, serial killers and just plain jane psychos, drop them off in a game reserve/hunting ground and hunt them down.

Pretty cool that it mimicks what humans do sometimes do. Setting up game preserve and hunt on that ground.

That's odd, isn't that called Double Jeopardy? I thought you couldn't do that.

Yeah, but it isn't offering anything we haven't already seen. We've already done the isolated and heavily-armed tough-guys vs the Predator thing in the first film. Sequels should advance things somehow, not just do what's already been done.

Everything about this upcoming film screams mediocrity. I bet what most people will say is, "Well, it sure was better than the AvP flicks, but I'm not sure I'd want to own it."

I just hope Ridley Scott takes his two new Alien films into new territory.

Well, I think that's where the new breed of Predators come into play. I also think it's cool they'll actually use familiar hunting methods on humans: Flushing them out, hunting them down with "hounds" and setting up traps.

But, I can understand your reservations about the movie

Because they don't need to, since pretty much anyone with an HDTV can achieve the same plastic looking images that we see on this Predator release simply by enabling the DNR function on said TV. But, in true consumer fashion, most people would rather rely on someone else to do this for them, rather than take the slightest amount of time to do anything for themselves. So . . . I get the spirit of what you're suggesting, ie everyone is satisfied, but unfortunately in these cases, one side gets screwed.

To the people in charge of bringing this disc to market, they would perceive this as offering a "cleaned up" and "not cleaned up" version on the same disc, which wouldn't make any sense. Obviously since they've decided to scrub out the excessive grain while they were re-transferring and recoloring the film, they consider it to be something that ought not be there. Or at least, not nearly as much. To offer the option for consumers to "watch how bad it was before we digitally remastered it" probably wouldn't make much sense to them, especially considering the additional cost to master and encode the film twice.
