No matter which way you slice it, this has gone from being able to remotely tie in with a discernable version of what an FF movie should be, to something not even being linked in any way, shape or form to the source material it's supposed to be based on.

I don't care what way the 'fans' or 'supporters' of this stupidity want to call it, but it's no longer going to rank on any comic fans list of 'Best Superhero Movies' but maybe the 'Worst' list.

The difference between a proper comic book movie and this, is that at least they adapt the spirit and source material as best as possible in an authentic manner for the movie medium. This is neither faithful, nor will it likely hold the same sort of spirit in the dynamic created by those character in the comic.

I'll watch it, and maybe even enjoy it, but this is NOT a Fantastic Four movie to me any longer. It's just got the name.
Exactly. I'm not against changes. Marvel Studios -- who, in my opinion, are making the best comic book films -- make changes. But they're still true to the comics and the characters.

Something like making Bucky around the same age as Steve, and having them be lifelong best friends? Great and smart change for the movies. I like it better than the kid sidekick Bucky from the comics.

Turning Doctor Doom into Victor Domashev? He's called Doom from blogging sites? Fox is one step away from having Perez Hilton give the Fantastic Four their name in the movie.

This would be comparable to Marvel having Bucky be a German Shepherd. Or Yellowjacket getting his name from a Twitter hashtag. But Marvel isn't that stupid.

I hated the way they turned Starfire (from the Teen Titans) into some kind of sex object/porn star goddess of the comic industry.
That had nothing to do with "The New 52" no matter how you feel about it.

This movie sucks. It's the worst film ever made.

That's actually a story. I think it was on Ellen. A little girl (with mom's help) wrote to DC and asked why she was running around in a bikini all the time or something like that. This was from the New 52 changes. I know she was already half nekkid but they managed to make it worse.

Edit: A 7-year-old girl responds to DC Comics' sexed-up reboot of Starfire

I want to bring up a point someone may counter with -- that this is just Fox "updating" or "modernizing" a character. WB "modernizing" Lex Luthor as a young genius with a Google-esque company? Fine (as long as he has the traits and character of Lex Luthor).

Having Victor Von Doom be a programmer who is referred to as "Doom" on blogging sites? That's just stupid.

I don't agree with their "this movie is grounded, dark, gritty, realistic" approach to a Fantastic Four movie. But if you were going to go that route, you can "ground it" while still having it be fantastical. Nolan grounded his Dark Knight movies, but he didn't go to this extent. He retained the spirit of the world and the characters in his Batman movies. Batman had his name, his suit, his tech, a Batcave. Joker looked like the Joker, with the clown make up. Scarecrow had a mask and used a fear gas, Catwoman looked like Catwoman. It was still "realistic and grounded" but it didn't betray the source material.

And it's like Fox is saying that an iron-fisted dictator of a repressed country is somehow irrelevant? Do we not deal with repressed countries and citizens, ruled by dictators? Doctor Doom is still "modern."

Making him a programmer who is referred to as "Doom" by bloggers is just lame. That's like making a Superman movie where he's a really strong, but otherwise human, wrestler and his wrestling name is "Superman." Or Matt Murdock isn't an urban vigilante. He does parkour and motorcycle stunts and he's "Daredevil." I mean, come on.

They're taking one of the most fantastical, adventurous comics of all time, and turning it "realistic." Up next: Sue Storm doesn't have invisibility powers. She has low self esteem, and she refers to herself as "the Invisible Woman" in anonymous psychology chat rooms because she feels invisible.

Johnny Storm has no fire powers. Too silly. He just loves to cook and he's accidentally set himself on fire too many times, so he becomes referred to as "the Human Torch." Reed doesn't have stretch powers. That would be ridiculous in a comic book movie. He's sarcastically called "Mr. Fantastic" because there's nothing special about him whatsoever. Ben Grimm is just a really big, tough guy, whose UFC fighter name is "the Thing."

That's realistic and gritty. Superpowers and the fantastic have no place in this movie about Marvel superheroes. Because that's what us comic book fans love to see; all the fun and the unrealistic and the unimaginable sucked out of the property to the point where only realism is left.

Can't wait for Fox's remake of the Harry Potter movies, a teen drama where non-magical kids go off to a non-magical boarding school and Vol de Mort, the school's bad boy, tries to kill Harry year after year. Not with magic, but by trying to kill him slowly by selling him cigarettes.

Not really. It's not like she went from the 80s Wolfman/Perez Starfire all the way to the post-IC Starfire overnight, in one fell swoop.

Anyways, didn't mean to derail the thread. Sorry.

It's starting to sound like this is Fox's f'd up plan to try and troll Marvel for getting rid of the comic book. Fox is trying to say they weren't even going to really make a Fantastic Four-based movie, joke's on you!

Not judging the movie before it's out but this image makes a valid point.

The whole cast and crew must be trolling the media and internet folk. Fox and Trank are doing an experiment to lower expectations so much that the film will actually be good.

I love how he says "all the actors in that other one were a lot older"..... lets see, Kate Mara is 31.... Jessica Alba was 24.. Michael is 27... Chris Evans was 25... Miles teller is 27 himself and lets see, Ioan Gruffudd was 29 when they started filming... for the "smartest man in the world" they really chose a wiz kid there

I also like how he's under the impression that audiences aren't into "overly comic book" comic book movies when most of the smash successes of recent years -- everything from The Avengers to Guardians of the Galaxy -- have been very "comic book-y."

Marvel Studios embraces the "comic book world" and look at all the success they've had. Fox acts like the comics are something to be embarrassed about. Fox wouldn't even call this movie "The Fantastic Four" if it weren't for the brand recognition, however small the Fantastic Four's brand recognition is.

Might as well call this "Chronicle 2," because that's what it sounds like to me.

That might actually be their best plan of attack promoting this movie.

especially since they havent shown any footage or imagery from the film yet. That Thing and Doom green screen images are still pretty vague.

So far, things are pretty mysterious when compared to the release of any other big superhero film. It's mysterious for a reason and they all must be trying to throw people off. Im assuming this crew/cast plan was conceived around the internet backlash of the casting of Jordan as Johnny Storm.

I don't understand how he equates Trank's "fresh remake" of F4 to what Marvel/Gunn did to GotG. It's like you said, Marvel makes changes, but they respect the material. I hope this guy is alone in being unable to see the differences.

This guy is playing the smartest man in the Marvel Comics universe guys. He makes Stark look like he's playing with Tinker Toys. Not in the Earth-21F universe, obviously.
