If either of these is the "mythology of evangelion" specials than I disagree. If you have time to go around and look into a bunch of the references in eva than fine. I didn't, so I found them to be pretty interesting.

I warmed up to the original ending after seeing the movie, and it's become my personal canonical conclusion. Not to say the movie isn't worth your time, it's quite a sight to behold. It's just that the movie's intent, to me at least, seemed to be more self destructive than self correcting.

Did lots of waiting to find good deals and now it is time to pick which I want for my collection.

I've sold the Perfect Collection because the video quality was crap and the box set condition wasn't good enough for me. I'm leaning towards keeping the slim Platinum set because I like having the artwork from the singles and the art box is very nice. But I see that the 2008 holiday special includes all of the bonus features which are left out of the slim release. Are the bonus features worthwhile?
There’s also the Platinum Edition Perfect Collection Tin that I have with all Extras from the Platinum Edition singles and I love my copy of it.

Here’s what it is like (not my video)

I thought it was overrated after my initial viewing too. It wasn't until I started going back and rewatching, reading the manga, looking up explanations, etc. that I started to fully appreciate the series. I finished my first viewing of the ADV dub last night and it was a great binge watch. Still prefer the Netflix dub but the ADV one will suffice until a Blu-ray is released over here.

The last two episodes of the series aren't very good. For new viewers I'd recommend watching 1-24 and then End of Evangelion, then go back and watch 25-26 afterward if you really want to. Come to think of it, those last 2 episodes are why I initially didn't care much for the series. Both were so confusing and made no sense to me. I waited a week to watch EoE, so my final thoughts on what I had just watched weren't that good until finishing the movie.

My favorite ending is the manga ending... probably because of how much I like Asuka and Shinji (and don't care for Rei):

I think the film and the TV ending both happen, but I dont see why people dislike the TV ending the whole second half of the show is introspective. The whole flashback episode occurs because the Fuyutsuki thinks about has happened and caused this for example.
I think the film ends on a hopeful note not happy but not sad either as does episode 26.

I don't think it's fair to call something overrated if you hadn't actually seen it (I'm glad you enjoyed it though). It is, has been and likely always will be my favorite anime of all time. Got me through some rough times back in college in the late 00s.

I have to rewatch the show sometime. The first and only time I watched it, almost exactly 19 years ago, I found it rather disappointing overall (it didn't help that I didn't particularly like any of the characters), except for the last two episodes which I thought were brilliant in their psychological deep-dive. I nevertheless double-dipped on the Premium Collection.

I think a lot of it has to do comparing NGE with the modern anime that we get today. So much of it is soulless or highly derivative with very little unique identity. I never expected NGE to feel like such a breath of fresh air when so many of the other shows I watch are samey or fall squarely under a certain genre umbrella. The scope and the stakes feel larger.

But the things I love most are the high level of detail in the drawing and the sound design. The world really comes alive with all of the minutiae details drawn inside NERV headquarters and Misato's apartment. You really feel like you're in Japan, or another world completely. The strong OP helps bolster a show in my mind too but what I really like are all of the ambient music and ambient noise in the cityscapes. It conveys a true sense of desolation and alteration within their world.

It is amazing how 90s anime, sometimes even the dirty grittiness of it, brings me back to an immersive fantasy world that I forgot existed.

Why would you assume that I hadn't seen it? I have the platinum thinpak collection from about 15 years ago and I watched the entire series on DVD back then. It didn't do much for me at the time.

I actually love how the last two episodes are basically video essays.

Misato's apartment is one of my all time favourite fictional settings. It is up there with Holly Golightly's apartment. SO MUCH character established via setting.

The final two episodes are brilliant and essential. They perfectly segue into End-of with a dash of non-linearity.
I eat up stuff like that anyway so ymmv I suppose. lol

I've never cared for the final two TV episodes, as they ground the entire external narrative to a halt. If I had been living in Japan during that era, I would have been pissed to have to wait a full year just for a 25-minute preview of the ending (from Ep. 26 in March '96 to D&R in March '97) and then another four months after that for the actual full ending itself (EoE in July '97). Not to mention that if I didn't want to pony up for two movie tickets then I'd have to wait until August '98 (Air) and Sept. '98 (Magokoro wo, Kimi ni) to rent them at the local video shop.

I see what you're getting at, but seeing Rei as depicted below just seems wrong somehow.

I love it

I'd just really, really, really, really love to see it as an alternate retelling. Never to replace the original Eva in any way, but I just think it could be a fantastic show.
