It's sad. I have part one in 3D and now part two won't match. I still have 3 working displays and 5 working players.

I also have a LG 65" 3D TV and even though it has screen burn-in the TV will have to die before I give up 3D.

I still keep my Samsung with active-shutter 3D. Love it so much

The story of Ateides in the novel Dune Messiah is not exactly what fans of the two most recent movies might be expecting. I expect a pretty big deviation by Villeneuve for the next movie.

Lynch’s Dune is probably my favorite film, and part one didn’t do much for me, but I was very impressed with part two. I like how Villeneuve focused on the mixture of politics and religion. A lot of that was sadly cut from Lynch’s film or probably not filmed when they decided to keep it well under three hours. I’m looking forward to part three, if it happens.

I felt the pacing was better on Dune Part 1, along with better character development. My main complaints with Dune part 2 would be that it needed more Feyd scenes, Walken needed more screen time to feel more menacing, Baron Harkonnen should have had a more sadistic scene or at-least the sounds behind the door more grimacing and the reveal of a strait out bloodbath, something that reveals the Barron is seriously messed up. And Dave Bautista’s death should have been more Epic. All in all : 20 Min. More feyd, 5 min. More Walken, 2 or 3 more min tacked on to the Barron scene and Dave’s Death scene.

I agree that the movies never portrayed the baron as corrupt and deranged as they could have but both Shaddam and Rabban appear in literally only one chapter each of the book (maybe two for the emperor) and Rabban is killed off page. Thufir and Stillgar are the ones who deserved more screen time.

Well, while I wouldn't disagree with the additional scenes for those characters. I was thinking for a film, bringing in the emperor for such a short time, there is no feel or sense of the regal or the power or even much of the character performance for Walken to shine as well as feel like more of a threat. I’m still over all excited and happy with what we got. When it was first announced they were remaking Dune, I was interested and hopeful…when Villeneuve’s name was dropped I was over the moon. Sicario and Bladerunner earned him my cash out of pocket for just about any release he puts in the theatre… sadly I missed pre Sicario films on the big screen

I wasn't mad about Walken but I did find it an odd choice. Shaddam in the books doesn't even appear until the last one or two chapters, he mostly exists in the books through people talking about him. And in the book he's Walken's age but appears to be around 35 because of spice use/genetics and is much more militaristic. Little bit disappointing that they chose to yet again go with flowing robes old man IMO.

Some of the casting choices in the movie are spot on perfect in my opinion like Stillgar and Duke Leto. I think Jessica, Paul, Duncan, Gurney and even Chani are also good although I don't really like what they chose to do with Chani. But much as I like Walken, that's definitely some stunt casting because there's nothing in the book to suggest Christopher Walken. But then again he's barely in the story so it's an opportunity to just do whatever you want.

There's an over 3 hour fan edit that brings some of it back.

After much delay, I finally watched it yesterday.

Denis Villeneuve does not miss! He has been one of my favourites for quite a while now, way before all the Dune hype. I don’t really have much to add that hasn’t already been said, but Dune was an absolute assault on the senses.

It’s a juggernaut and every element is firing on all cylinders. The action is explosive, which contrasts well with the deeper and more intimate moments. Like its predecessor, it’s a technical masterpiece. I’m not sure which one I prefer, maybe the first because it was such a wow moment.

If Villeneuve can ace the third film, it’ll easily be one of the strongest trilogies ever.

Denis Villeneuve Wants to Make One More Dune Movie—but Don’t Call It a Trilogy

Quote:
There are more books after Dune: Messiah. Do you think about directing more movies or letting someone else continue this as a franchise?

Listen, if Dune: Messiah happens, it will have been many years for me on Arrakis, and I would love to do something else. I think that it would be a good idea for me to make sure that, in Messiah, there are the seeds in the project if someone wants to do something else afterwards, because they are beautiful books. They are more difficult to adapt. They become more and more esoteric. It's a bit more tricky to adapt, but I'm not closing the door. I will not do it myself, but it could happen with someone else.

Guess that rules out it being called Dune: Part 3 instead of Dune: Messiah.

Looks like some theaters have started listing an IMAX re-release for October 20th in the US, very likely with a sneak peek at Max's Dune Prophecy series

Technically, parts 1 and 2 make up Dune. Messiah is a different book.

Yes, of course.

There had been discussion earlier that perhaps Villaneuve would call the next film Dune: Part 3 instead of Dune: Messiah, as many guessed he may see the story as a true third chapter to his adaptation of Paul's journey with no real separation like the two books. And of course for marketing. This interview seems to dispel that inclination.

I couldn’t help notice the October 20th re-release has a 3 hour, 31 minute runtime on AMC’s app.

Obviously that could simply be a mistake, happens all the time, but maybe they’re going to have a 45-minute look at the show?
