crobb666,

Back in the early days of home media, the economics environment and cultural realities were very different than they are today.

Yes, I agree in part that it is interesting to reflect upon the qualitative differences between yesteryear and today.

But there is a flaw in the premise that pricing should have remained relatively similar to the early inflated prices of LD and VHS in this day and age.

LD remained a niche format due to the cost of hardware and media. VHS became mainstream for movies at home when the prices lowered from those $100+ MSRPs because the Studios were trying to maximize profits from early adopters and the perceived value of the product during that era, and to offset what they felt were profit losses with the rental businesses.

Early on, VHS copies were also priced high to recoup those perceived royalty losses until they established a profit sharing scheme with rental stores.

It was after that when VHS copies for general consumers were priced dramatically lower, along the lines of $20 and rental copies for the store were priced higher. This was also another reason why early on copies were priced so high was because the rental stores may have been selling some of their rental units before the releases for the general public.

Should we be paying $400-$1,000 per title today for the quality increases relative to what it might have cost back forty years ago?

Would smartphones be nearly as advanced and ubiquitous today if their pricing remained relatively static or exponentially more than back in the day?

So yes, it is amazing what we can enjoy today in our homes in comparison to the past, but part of the deal of advancements is that it can and should be cheaper for the general public over time.
Very different, maybe, but not like you're saying. It's not going to be cheaper just because of advancements alone. Neither are these improvements driving price up per se... It's more straightforward than that.

Look, it's always a volume vs price, supply vs demand balance. DVD had a high volume at (relatively) low price in the heyday, but remember that even $14.99 in 1999 (The Matrix on DVD) is $29.50 today. Step forward and $24 in 2008 (300 on Blu, right after the format war) is $36.50, and $19.99 in 2016 (In the Heart of the Sea on 4K) is $27.25 today... But none of those volumes are what is sold today. This is a niche in a niche compared to even pre-pandemic disc sales figures, so naturally the price is going to remain at least at the DVD commodity days of 30-ish today-dollars. The economic logic of it all won't work with anything less to drive enough revenue...

None of that is to say we should be grateful, hat in hand, for the bounty of tech we have at home and pay any cost without complaint. Far from it. I'm merely pointing out the economic model we're in.

Do you guys think I should pre-order now at $70 or wait for a price drop?

I always feel that pre-ordering pretty much guarantees you the best price possible, but just want to hear other people’s two cents.

Might as well put in the order now if you plan on getting it day one. You never know when Amazon could have a price drop and then raise the price again. I’m not expecting it to drop below $70, but I certainly wouldn’t mind if it did!

I’m hoping when this goes out of print that they re-issue them as singles with slipcovers like they did with Bruce Lee. I give it a 50/50 shot.

May get both. This is a set and there's no reason for Arrow to commission new artwork outside of the case. Which they did for their store exclusive. Otherwise the regular set appears to just be using the first movie's poster art.

What would stink is the price dropping after release day. I recall that happening with The Mexico Trilogy.

Nope. Says “Reversible sleeves featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Florey.” So one side is original poster art, one side new art by Florey. Or if you get their exclusive, new art by Matt Frank and Roberto Rivera Padro. No VHS art on either sadly.

Since TMNT isn’t included, I have to hang on to my 4 Film Favorites set.

My first reaction to this is to think, "Why not just keep the 4-film set for that one movie? It doesn't take up any more space on the shelf."

But in my heart of hearts, I get it.

The pizza box blu-ray set? It's fatter than a single blu-ray to hold discs I don't need and will never look at again.
I like single cases for each movie, so now have that with the artwork for TMNT, and while I get the idea of the pizza box packaging, I never liked the look of it.

Well, since my set is DVD, I could buy the TMNT standalone BluRay.
