Ugh, that's how old I was when I saw Return of the Jedi in theaters. Thanks for making me feel so, so old...

Just kidding. I actually was thinking of why it was so hard for me to not sob uncontrollably when my wife and I watched the trailer last night. Yes, it was in part due to how incredible it is, and the Han and Leia theme hits you straight in the feels. But I was mostly thinking of the fact that on December 17th at 7:00pm, my six and eight-year-old will be having their first theatrical Star Wars experience, and I just cannot wait to see their reaction and experience it with them. To me, Star Wars is family and it's love. It was my first theatrical experience, and I will undoubtedly be a sobbing mess when I look over at my kids and see them grinning ear to ear for 2 hours and 16 minutes.

The trolling in this thread is pretty hilarious, actually. People get so defensive about star wars crap, it's got no choice but to be funny

Georgie Boy, Jar Jar Abrams, I couldn't give a rat's furry plague-covered balls who directs a movie. Just make a good movie ffs.

I ordered my ticket about a half-hour back. It's not IMAX or 3D, but good old 2D will do just fine on a big screen. It's STAR WARS MOTHER HUBBARDS!.

So the Air & Space museum in DC just confirmed today by putting tickets on sale that they will be showing the new Star Wars in 2D 15/70mm IMAX. So that is where I will be seeing it. I would've preferred it be in 3D but I'd rather have the 6+ story screen over the 3D.

Anyways, to quell some of the questions about IMAX here is the facts. Abrams did shoot at least one scene with film based IMAX cameras. Any theaters showing the movie in 2D 15/70mm film then the movie will FILL the big screen (with its 1.43:1 AR) when those IMAX scenes come up. The rest of the time you will see a 2.4:1 AR.

Now there are some IMAX theaters that offer the new laser projectors and thus will be showing this movie in 3D "15/70mm". What I mean is that the movie will be shown digitally BUT you will get that glorious screen filling 1.43:1 AR when those IMAX scenes come up.

Unfortunately these new laser projectors are only capable of 4K resolutions. So if you care about the absolute best video quality then the 2D 15/70mm IMAX showings are the way to go because 15/70mm film has a resolution of around somewhere between 16K and 32K. So those showings would easily offer at least 4 times the resolution.

I'll admit this only matters for the IMAX scenes and the other scenes will be 2.4:1 film blown up to fill the width of the screen. Some viewers might argue this leaves you with a slightly blurry image though.

As for non-laser based digital IMAX theaters; those have a 1.9:1 AR and when the IMAX scenes come up that screen will be filled otherwise you'll just have the 2.4:1 AR the rest of the time. All of these showings will be strictly 3D.

Anything else will just leave you with the 2.4:1 AR the whole time and most likely will be digital 3D but may be available in 2D.

No, no, no. The rebels had no funds and they didn't pay their Verizon bill. And AT&T was controlled by the Empire and they monitored all email communications.
Besides, don't you know that the source of Vader's anger was that he was de-friended on Facebook by six other Jedi?

But there was a much bigger plot hole. It was never explained WHY the Empire wanted to rule the galaxy. What did Vader and the Emperor get out of it? Material goods didn't seem to be the point of it. One could argue they wanted power for the sake of power, but power is used to accomplish some goal and they didn't seem to have any such goal. As bad as the prequels were, at least the Trade Federation blockade made some sense (even though it was a stupid plot line for a film that was supposed to appeal to ten-year-olds).

If I didn't get headaches so easily sitting in a theater for more than four hours I would definitely be doing the marathon. Alas, I cannot. Instead, I will be doing a daily marathon with the Complete Saga Blu-rays up release of 'The Force Awakens'.

Once you get to a duped 4th gen release print (which IMAX 15/70 still has to go through, unless you get a cherry showprint off the IMAX negative) you lose a fair bit of resolution so the 32K thing is absolute horseshit, sorry. Factor in the inherent instability of the film projection process and you'll also lose some resolution thataway too, so while the Laser version may 'only' be 4K it'll have come directly off of the DI (itself a scan of the negative) and will be rock solid in terms of projection (the 2.40 scenes will look better too for not having been blown up into 15/70 and then duped). I'll bet cash money that it will run the 15/70 version extremely close in terms of real-world viewing, and I'm not just saying that because I'm sore I won't be seeing the 2D 15/70 version.

Fair enough, would it be better if I said that, IN THEORY, the 2D 15/70mm IMAX film showings should be better than the 3D 15/70mm IMAX digital laser projection based showings?

Yes, that would be acceptable. I wish you'd stop calling the laser ones "3D 15/70" though, all that will do is cause confusion. "3D 1.44 Laser version" will suffice.

Seriously though, I am MUCHO jealous of the 15/70 showings, not just because it's 15/70 but because it's not bloody 3D! I still can't believe that the BFI didn't get one of them prints.

While I agree with most of your comments and I always talk about "real world" capabilities of film as distinguished from what's possible under perfect conditions, I have to admit that when I saw Interstellar in 15/70 at the Loew's Lincoln Square in NYC, it was an absolutely perfect presentation. The print was so clean and so rock-steady, I had to keep looking back at the booth to make sure it was really film.

Unfortunately, they're not playing Star Wars in 15/70 and they haven't installed the laser projectors as yet. I can't believe how crappy the NYC movie presentations have become.

I'm considering dressing up as Chewie for this one. I've never been to an opening for Star Wars so I'm rather excited to see the turnout!

You may have been lucky enough to get a showprint struck off the A&B roll negative (IMAX 15/70 neg + 6K 15/70 filmouts of the 35mm) rather than the duped single strand IP-IN prints. Boy, that would've been something.

The BFI is in the exact same boat as your NYC: no 15/70 for Star Wars but no Laser either, what an ignominious state of affairs for one of the bestest screens in all of Engerland.

No. You know that it's not absolutely necessary to see it on the first day or even the first week. The original Star Wars played in many theaters for a year!

When episode 3 came out, I was consulting for a company that evaluated quality of theatre and presentation. We were assigned certain movies and we had to go on premiere day and if a film was playing on more than one screen in a multiplex, we had to watch it on every screen. In the theatre I was assigned, Star Wars was playing on ten screens (out of 24)! Will be interesting to see how many screens the new film takes up and for how long.

Got 3 tickets for opening night at 6.30pm on Dec 17.

Then my dad calls me up and says he has 3 tickets for opening night at 6.30pm on Dec 17!

Same theater, same session, same time, same row!! We now have six seats for Star Wars!
