Honestly, though, I’m curious about what Criterion could bring to the table that MGM could not with regard to the existing source material for In the Heat of the Night. I was under the impression that MGM’s print was the best that they had to work with. I’ll be delighted to be proven wrong.
I feel similarly about The Great Escape, because, while the Blu-ray has drawn the ire of the masses, I figure that it looks as good as the surviving source material can look. Last edited by The Great Owl; 10-16-2018 at 12:50 AM. |

Notorious is the apex of classic film. They need to finish it off with Spellbound now. And, "They call me MISTER Tibbs!" Good month indeed.

Pre-ordering Notorius for sure, one of my top five favourite Hitchcock films. Bergman and Grant are phenomenal and Claude Rains is both frightning and melencholic, a truly great film.
Will this release of Mikey and Nicky be May's cut that was shown in 1989 or the one that Paramount officially released in 1976? In any case I much prefer May as a screenwriter, if Ishtar is anything to go by, cannot stand that film. |

I wouldn't set expectations for "Mikey and Nicky" on "from the director of Ishtar". If you haven't seen "A New Leaf", I'd recommend that a lot easier than "Mikey and Nicky".
I actually wasn't aware of the different cuts -- the NY Times review of the film says 118 minutes, and the IMDB says 119 minutes; also Variety, and the screenings at the New Beverly (though I found one review which says that the New Bev was actually the 106 minute version)... but DVDcompare and DVDbeaver indicate that the DVD is 106 minutes. Which is also what the Criterion disc lists. So I am gonna guess this is the director's recut version. Last edited by thatguamguy; 10-16-2018 at 06:33 AM. |

They have to wait until new, decent restorations are available.
Il Cinema Ritrovata screened a restored tinted 41-minute Shoulder Arms just this summer (photochemical, 35mm) - along with a DCP of The Bond. It would be so important to represent all of the Chaplin films in their early states as well as in Chaplin's last versions. I hope Criterion will manage to do that, and I'd rather wait years for such an edition. |

I am hoping that today is the day of the Criterion flash sale. I am getting my shopping cart ready!

I noticed on Criterion's website that Z is listed as "out of print". Didn't Criterion state a few months ago that the only Costa-Gavras film they lost the rights to was The Confession? Does anyone know what's going on with this title, if Z is truly OOP or is Criterion planning on upgrading Z to blu-ray in the near future?

I saw that! Between that release and Criterion's twitter busting out a gif from the movie yesterday it just seemed to make sense! haha. I wonder if Criterion will eventually do something with this new master, if able to.

If Criterion decides to release it on blu with the same master, I hope they can include some exclusive special features as well as some other Chytilova short films and/or Fruit of Paradise.
