Watched Phoenix today, a blind buy from the B&N sale. I have to say this is now one of my favorites of the collection. I was absolutely enthralled by it. It definitely had a Vertigo vibe to it, which I absolutely loved. Have to look into more of the director’s work. I hope more people check it out.

I caught it at the Maine International Film Festival a few years ago...easily one of my favorites from the 2010s. One of the more underrated from the collection.

The film left me feeling cold and bewildered for reasons I have yet to pinpoint. The performances were immaculate, the cinematography was lucid, it was tightly plotted and edited efficiently, pacing and tone were pretty much perfect. But as a whole the film felt just off to me, I remember getting a similar feel at the end of Hidden Figures last year, which I have eventually come to attribute to the fact that the film felt too "safe" and "by the books" for my tastes. But obviously the latter two are hardly factors effecting Phoenix, as it is immensely well layered, brimming with atmosphere and has a poignant atypical ending. I am inclined to maybe blame the lack lustre (or may be even not very good) music, but I didn't get such a feeling during my viewing and a film should work regardless of it's music and I don't feel that a strong score would have helped the film very much. Maybe the film would work better if made in the early 40s with more period specific filmmaking choices, but who knows! Overall the film just didn't work for me.

I do appreciate Criterion releasing a Christian Petzold film though, as he is a clearly talented new voice who has yet to garner a lot of awards or mainstream attention. Barbara needs to see a release one of these days!

Barbara has a US release, bare bones sadly and apparently a lossy audio track. Had they migrated some extras I maybe would have double-dipped. Good film. (I have the German blu-ray, lots of extras (German language only), lossless audio.)

I would like to revisit this movie....But The Villian (1979) qualifies for me as a Kirk Douglas comedy. It was a live action Wile E. Coyote character Kirk was

Apologies for bumping my own post but I'm about to head out to B&N and maybe somebody who has seen these missed the post.

Looks like it's going to be the cover art for the Blu-ray and DVD as well.

Theatrical poster for Janus Films and Blu-ray and DVD artwork for Criterion Collection’s re-release of Edgar G. Ulmer’s 1945 film noir classic, ‘Detour’.

I think they overdid it with the yellow. The yellow lipstick right in the foreground is glaring and distracting. Seems very amateur that so many details are yellow there. The original posters handled the use of that color miles better than this

edit: I made a toned-down edit, which I personally think looks more aesthetically pleasing. The yellow lipstick, tie, and eyes of the original just seem so silly to me, and kills the contrast of the image as whole.

[Show spoiler]

Check out Jerichow and Barbara from the same director, the former is available on DVD only via Cinema Guild (good quality DVD though), and the latter via an ok blu ray from Kino (lossy audio, no extras).

I felt the same and now enough time has passed that I've really wanted to revisit it. I certainly left with the feeling that I missed something that maybe I wasn't able to receive appropriately on that theatre visit.

I'm sure it will get released on the 13th, cause the criterion website has been keeping pushing the release date back by one day each day. The backorder is a glitch, I'm sure of it.

I hope it gets released in Tuesday, This was one of my top ones right now.

A page has gone up for Bread and Alley, a Kiarostami short film, which leads me to believe that this box set will be announced sooner than later.

B&N lists many foreign titles under their original language, making them hard to find

Seeing that ANNIE HALL deal on the main page is putting Criterion ideas in my head.

I would find it a little wasteful of a release, but it got my mind moving a bit.
