The ones that interest me that I haven't already seen (or turned off like I said in an earlier post) that my local B&N store has in stock are "For All Mankind" (rented the DVD yesterday from my local library) and "Ride With the Devil".

I'm not a blind buyer per se and $20 ain't cheap besides but at least I have one to watch and then I will decide. I'll get to it before the 1st so I can snag it when the sale starts if I feel it offers enough replay value. Browsing reviews, the PQ and AQ are excellent I gathered.

The other movie? Well what do you folks thing about that one?

Ride With The Devil? Pretty good film.... anything set around the Civil war is pretty good in my book...... This film gave me a whole new appreciation for Jewel too.

Deep Discount just started their Criterion Collection Sale as part of their fall campaign. (CODE: FALLSALE for additional 20% off) but I believe that next week's B&N sale will be much better...

Their fall sale has been going on for some time.

I just saw that the Jan Criterion releases have 27.99 preorder prices now from amazon.

Well CG...looks like it's going to be "The Docks of New York", instead of "House" (still on short wait/NetFlix).

Probably a better choice right now anyway. It'll be more expensive and the sale would save me 50%.

I didn't know that Criterion had released (2) of the (3) silents as individual DVDs.

I'll let you know what I think.

Just got word that B&N is cancelling their Criterion sale in favor of a Steven Spielberg film sale.

Everyone pick which first sentence dr. Svet will give to the next criterion bd review.

1. This is a strong high definition transfer.
2. This is a very strong high definition transfer.
3. This is a exceptionally strong high definition transfer.
2.

I just watched "Walkabout" for the first time. It was pure visual poetry....a great film. Certainly something that wouldn't be made today considering the nude underage actors and intense hunting scenes. However, these things only added to the realism of the experience and were done with taste. It was an excellent viewing experience and I highly recommend this movie. PQ was incredible for such an old film.

None of these.

The next first sentence to the next Criterion BD review should be:

"Charlie Chaplin's "Modern Times" (1936) arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of Criterion."

I think the forums here would set the internet on fire or kill it menacingly.

Anyone interested in Hausu, not sure if it's a mistake or not, but B&N's website has it right now for $23. Couple that with all those helpful coupons/websites/etc, that'd come out rather cheap.

I just finished watching House. Interesting, quirky little film. I liked the randomness of the camera angles, and things popping in and out of frames. I appreciated the strangeness. Having said that, it's not a film I would want to see again anytime soon. It's just not my cup of tea.

Well...it seems they didn't. I just got the rental and NetFlix has split up the (3) DVDs and are renting them separately.

After "Docks of New York, which film do you suggest next?

Thanks!

Curious what titles will be your prime purchases for this upcoming sale. I'm definitely not going crazy like last November (spent nearly 2K). This time around will stay under $200. If anything, the only titles I really want is the Von Sternberg, Modern Times, the Thin Red Line, Crumb and Night of the Hunter. Possibly for Eclipse, I still need to get the Bergman, Allan King, Sacha Guitry and George Bernard Shaw. But that's pretty much it. Still going back and forth on the Renoir "Stage & Spectacle" set.

The Criterion portion was added yesterday (DD e-mails went out yesterday promoting this)

kndy...have you seen any/all of the von Sternbergs yet?

If so, then after The Docks of New York, which of the other (2) silents would you suggest seeing first?

Haven't seen any of them yet. But will be purchasing it during this upcoming B&N sale. It's the primary title that is a priority for this sale for me.

I would watch in order. But Docks is my fav, then Underworld, then Last Command. But all are good, so you won't be sad if you end up buying the set.
