you should be able to get these cheap now since they re-release Star Trek steelbook in Germany... the demand for the futureshop probably just went downhill and people would rather buy it cheaper from Germany.

Even with the new release, I don't think people are going to just start selling their original copies for that much cheaper. It's not like it's the same cover as the original releases.

it's about supply vs. demand...

for example.

100 people wanted to buy any Star Trek steelbook...even though it's a different cover..they still want any blu-ray disc steelbook of Star Trek.

If there is only 1 on eBay for sale, you have a "potential" 100 people fighting for that 1 steelbook.

Now...since there is a release for a new steelbook of Star Trek..."maybe" 50 of the 100 people have decided to buy the new one for LESS just so they can have a steelbook in their collection. In that case, only 50 people are remaining that is looking for the first Star Trek steelbook....therefore...the demand for the original Star Trek just decrease. As more and more people who want just a steelbook of the movie, they can just buy it for less...and no need to chase after the first cover.

If i didn't have the first cover steelbook already, then I might as well buy the Germany one...and I wouldn't need to look for the first cover.

We shall find out in terms of demand for the original steelbook once Germany release it...

I see your point, but it doesn't seem like that worked for Inglourious Baterds.(FS) Look how many different Steelbooks there are for that one. And the Futureshop copy still goes for over $100 easy. I know not every case is like that, but it's a pretty good example.

And regarding supply & demand, if nobody is willing to pay what the sellers are asking anymore for the original Star Trek steelbook, they're probably more likely to just keep it in their collection making the supply of the originals even harder to come by.

That is what i do with re-releases. Only buy the re-releases if the cover appeals to my eyeballs.

Good points. I agree. Just because new steels of previous releases are being issued, that doesn't necessarily mean that we are going to see an influx of previously hard to find original releases on Ebay etc., much less a dramatic decrease in previous auction / private seller values. If the new releases were truly limited in number and looked a lot better than the originals, I would say otherwise. I just don't see that happening.

With regards to your INGLORIOUS BASTERDS example, yes, the FS version may still be over $100, however, if there was only one version (the FS version) you can bet that it would command a much higher price than it does now.

Right now, with all the different IB versions, everyone might have their favourite to pick from. If there was only one version, demand for that one version would certainly be higher, unless of course they printed 5x more copies.

As for your point about people keeping their originals, that is certainly an option. I may be sitting on 100 copies of STAR TREK FS waiting for it to crack the $200 mark.

That may never happen now as the number of STAR TREK SB collectors has dwindled. I may be sitting on $20k of inventory which may or may not ever sell. If I can afford tying up that amount of cash, then that's fine, but it could just never materialize and I am out $20k.

The only thing that could change over time is that new SB members join who create a larger demand than there is supply.

If, for example, Germany prints out 1000 copies of STAR TREK, but 2000 people start collecting STAR TREK SBs, then we have a price rise again.

So to all of you waiting for a big return on your SB investment, get on that street corner and start proclaiming about the great benefits of SB collecting to the mass population!!

There are A LOT of Inglourious Basterds steelbooks. They're even releasing another one in the not too distant future, and I doubt that's going to hurt the value of the FS version anymore than the other releases. Just saying. The discussion isn't even about reselling all of these Star Trek's for a profit. The discussion was that once the new Star Trek was released that the marked would be suddenly be flooded with copies of the old Steelbook at highly discounted prices, which I was saying wasn't going to happen.
