We are already seeing 8K displays and A/V receivers with 8K HDMI inputs. No company makes a 8K HDMI input unless they plan on connecting a external 8K source like a 8K camcorder or a 8K optical disc player. There is a strong possibility that around the year 2026 that a 8K optical disc format might be released. Also around 2026 8K satellite boxes, 8K cable boxes, 8K videogame systems, and 8K streaming boxes might be released.

As long as data centers use exponentially more electrical grid to serve higher resolution transcoded content, there has to be some approach that mitigates that. There has always been some transportable storage solution. Even if it isn't a disc, it will be something other then using data centers.

When VHS came out we had a infinite amount of content to sell to consumers.
When LD came out we had a infinite amount of content to sell to consumers. When DVD came out we had a infinite amount of content to sell to consumers. When BD came out we had slightly less than an infinite amount of content to sell to consumers. When UHD-BD came out we had a little less then an infinite amount of content to sell to consumers. We have no 8K content to sell consumers other than a few hundred 65mm production movies. Yes Hollywood is beginning to shoot movies with 8K cameras but not with the intention of developing an 8K format. Strictly for editing option purposes to create a better 4K DI. Hollywood is leaning more towards 6K cameras for the same purpose. |

That would be the new VVC codec which promises to reduce bandwidth by up to 50%. But that's still about 100 mbps versus the 25 for 4K.

The issue is that 4K is already having adoption issues and digital is taking off. When 8K becomes affordable for the general consumers, would there be any demand for it?
There is diminishing returns where you push it too far and the returns you get is marginal. Would anyone see any benefits to 8K in screens smaller than 75? I am not saying studios won't try for 8K but for me, 4K is the last physical I want to buy and upgrade. I can't afford to keep up with the market if every X years they decide to release a new format and make me upgrade my movies again to see the benefits. I skipped 3D and I will be skipping 8K. |

I am not sure how stock is in USA but in Canada, it is harder to find older titles for cheap. Anything that is older than 3 years are not stocked in stores anymore. Or if you do find them, they are priced quite high. I wonder when the PS6 comes out, would it have a 8K drive. |
