I find it a little odd people go nuts for the action in Ghost Protocol, considering the bike chase sequence in Rogue Nation is better than any action sequence in the former.

I will concede, however, that I don't think anything has beat the Burj Khalifa set piece... yet. That is still such a massive, MASSIVE achievement in filmmaking altogether. It's so anxiety inducing.

I do think that the HALO jump in the upcoming MI: Fallout could finally best that, though.

I absolutely love the tower scene in GP. Makes my stomach queasy and I'm all tense just watching it. The bike chase is pretty damn awesome.

My theater trips are pretty much curtailed so I'll be buying Fallout when it's released.

I love five precisely because it's not focused on wanking over some big set piece, they get the big publicised plane shot out of the way in the opening scene and seem to imply "now that's what you came to see is out of the way, it's not gonna be that kind of MI movie". Indeed it's not, it's more like De Palma's twisty-turny spy thriller that started this series (though it's not action-less by any means) and I couldn't think of higher praise for what Cruise and McQ did on Rogue Nation. It's almost a deconstruction of what people expect, what with Ilsa Faust taking centre stage in proceedings (it's like she's in a parallel film or something) and stealing the movie right out from under Cruise's nose, and other stuff like Benji's bit when he imagines finally wearing a mask in the field.

I adore this scene, Tom Hollander shoplifting the entire thing and Baldwin's awesome hair, so awesome that they can't keep it in frame half the time:

Rogue Nation is ace and overall has the best action sequences, even though the Burj is amazing. I love that the team is always on the back foot in each sequence, adding tension and a twist on each setpiece.

Yeah, I mean even though the team is always going rogue or off the grid or blah blah blah in each film it rarely feels like they're truly behind the eight ball, there's always some gadget or set-piece that gets them out of trouble but with RN you've got the x factor of Ilsa Faust, she's got her own agenda and her own superiors to answer to (what I mean about it feeling like she's moonlighting in another film at the same time) and it's like the team is always a step behind. I can appreciate why some people don't gid that but me, I loved it. Ditto for the stripped-down finale, playing out a game of cat and mouse on the streets of London which itself reminds me of the shadowy Prague stuff in MI 1.

Also, Sean Harris as Solomon Lane gives PSH a run for his money as the best villain in the series so far.

Glad to see that for the first time, they're having a villain reprise their role in another film.

OMG, I forgot how bad these original bluray scans look. Untouched negative damage and framing was horrible. White and black spots from negative damage is all over the original blurays. I was going to hold out for the 4K box set to come out, but I may need to upgrade to the UHD versions now. I agree with this review of the old bluray.

J.J. really changed the series. 1 is very De Palma. 2 is very Woo. 3-5 have a much more modern ‘action’ feel.

Harris is super underrated, dude.

He has an immense amount of acting range, and has the type of distinct features where you can get him to look like all sorts of different characters.

Made it through M:I 2. Huzzah! It was somehow so much worse than I remember it being (and I remember it being pretty f***ing awful). I can only echo the sentiments of others and say the presentation is excellent so that's great news for those who genuinely like the movie.

There are so many WTF moments, but peak nonsense for me has to be when Thandie Newton is walking (in slow motion of course) up to Dougray Scott and her scarf blows off in the wind (still slow motion) and he..........catches the scarf, ooooo, and looks at her intensely - oh so very intensely - smouldering even. Then she gives him 'sexy look', then more intense (slow motion) staring from Dougray as her places it around her neck again. And so it continues....

Everyone in the editing room apparently decided that sequence was a bullseye. I can only assume they were all drunk and high.

I watched 4 & 5 back to back. The story in 4 flows much better. 5 feels like pieces assembled. The RN bike chase was amazing.
